In his three Seattle restaurants, Douglas capitalizes on the wealth of seafood and produce in the Northwest, while also emphasizing the robust fusion of tastes inherited from the city's multiethnic community. These components inform such starters as Tom's Tasty Sashimi Tuna Salad with Green Onion Pancakes and Tiny Clam and Seaweed Soup. One section of the book is devoted to the Japanese concept of bento, which traditionally presents several small tastes in a lacquered box. Douglas, however, employs a platter for his array of bento, which includes such items as Octopus with Green Papaya Slaw and Green Curry Vinaigrette, and Matsutake Dashi made with unusual matsutake mushrooms. Folks outside the area will need the mail-order sources Douglas suggests because some ingredients like matsutakes or kasu paste will be difficult to locate elsewhere. Most recipes, however, use accessible ingredients and techniques. I splashed on my old copy too much which using it. I bought it used to reduce the cost of owning 2. Hey, I have two copies of The Herbfarm Cookbook too with dozens of post it tabs on each copy. Just single copies of my other references. I'd start with his seafood recipes but the Star Anise Ice Cream is just about perfect, just enough flavor with being too strong or bland. Do the suggested 5 spice cake pairing (with the suggested Orange Anglaise) but slightly increase the 5 spice, maybe mine was old? Copper River Salmon is in so this book will be used again soon as will The Herbfarm Cookbook. I just wish so much of my Chervil hadn't bolted.

I bought this attractive book as part of a Christmas gift for my daughter who lives in Seattle.The recipes were varied and interesting. There is plenty of information on local restaurants, food markets and other local attractions.

I've just received this cookbook, so it might be too early to review, but I'll give my initial impressions. I am a distracted sort of cook who looks for new ideas alongside basic kitchen guidance to keep me on track. This was sitting on my counter when I had forgotten how to make vinaigrette. Indeed, Tom includes a basic mustard vinaigrette, and includes this alongside a lovely-looking panzanella salad. I might not have tried the salad if it hadn't been right there, so here's kudos for the organization which allows those two not to be separated. He does a good job going over regional ingredients. He also notes popular items at his restaurants and tells how they were developed. This is particularly nice for Seattle residents like me who are familiar w/ those restaurants, I think. The reason I didn't give this cookbook 5 stars on the first pass is that there aren't enough recipes in it. but I might get over that quality-over-quantity decision and change the rating once I own the book for a little longer.

Being a Seattle ex-patriot, I feel like I know Mr. D well. I've had the privledge, over the years, not only to dine at all three restaurants but to meet the man as well, (I once begged him to let me live in the basement of the Dahlia and let me eat the crumbs from the table). In the chapter titled "Starters", my wife and I were among the 12,000 devouring Flash-fried Squid at "The Bite" (Side note: Tom, we're sorry it became a pain, but we just couldn't stop from stuffing our faces).Tom is not only a genius in his restaurants, but this book as well. Even if you have never had the chance to eat at one of his restaurants, this book will introduce you to you to one of the true greats of American cooking. Having eaten at all of the restaurants AND tried the recipes, he is right-on in telling you how to make these favorites.I never thought I would actually hold in my hands the "secrets" to Tuscan Bread Salad, but yet, here it is. (But Tom, how about the Tamales from Etta's?)Oh, and by the way, this book is not just about Tom's restaurants. Listen to his advice about visiting Seattle. Any world-class chef that will recommend Dick's for a late-night burger has his finger on the true pulse of the city!I may now live a thousand miles away, but Tom is here now, in my kitchen, guiding me as I make most of my favorites from his world. It will never be the same as a wonderful, romantic evening spent at the Dahlia or a rainy afternoon at Etta's, but at least it fills the void.Some of us remember the Blues 'n' BBQ events that Tom did for Food Lifeline. These events, not held at the restaurants but at a local park, spoke not only of the true giving spirit of Mr. D, but also give credibility to the chapter, "Mo'Poke Dadu". Is there anything the man cannot do?I do wish the recipe for Gingerbread that we enjoyed one dark miserable fall afternoon at Etta's was here, but hey, if enough of us buy this book, perhaps Tom will take requests for the next one....Tom, we miss you. Thank you for making the journey, via your first cookbook, to the culinary wasteland of Southern California.(P.S. I'm available for "R & D" anytime you're in the neighborhood!)

Tom Douglas's Dahlia Lounge Restaurant in Seattle served the best fare we encountered in the area. We especially liked his coconut cream pie and bought his cookbook containing the recipe. When we tried to make it we were delighted to experience the same delectable pie that we had in the restaurant.

This is a Seattle classic. I used it when it was new, not only to cook from and plan parties, but as a restaurant and shopping guide. Tom loves and knows Seattle.

About the Author

Qiu Miaojin (1969–1995)—one of Taiwan’s most innovative literary modernists, and the country’s most renowned lesbian writer—was born in Chuanghua County in western Taiwan. She graduated with a degree in psychology from National Taiwan University and pursued graduate studies in clinical psychology at the University of Paris VIII . Her first published story, “Prisoner,” received the Central Daily News Short Story Prize, and her novella Lonely Crowds won the United Literature Association Award. While in Paris, she directed a thirty-minute film called Ghost Carnival, and not long after this, at the age of twenty-six, she committed suicide. The posthumous publications of her novels Last Words from Montmartre and Notes of a Crocodile (forthcoming from NYRB Classics) made her into one of the most revered countercultural icons in Chinese letters. After her death in 1995, she was given the China Times Honorary Prize for Literature. In 2007, a two-volume edition of her Diaries was published.Ari Larissa Heinrich received a master’s in Chinese literature from Harvard and a PhD in Chinese studies from the University of California at Berkeley. Heinrich and Qiu—who would have been the same age if Qiu were still alive—crossed paths without knowing each other in Taipei and in Paris. He is the author of The Afterlife of Images: Translating the Pathological Body Between China and the West and the coeditor of Queer Sinophone Cultures. He teaches at the University of California at San Diego.

This is a surprising novel. I felt like talking with the writer. It has influence from Cortazar / carta a una señorita en París/ and her writing style kept me interested at all times.Why is this novel in the shadows while Niebla is well known in Latin America?I will look for her other writings!

Definitely an interesting book. The notes on the back are quite accurate and will give you a good sense if this is something that you would be interested in. My short visceral response to this book is: "Was it insane because it was so intense or was it intense because it was so insane". Please don't take "insane" literally.

A brilliant and sad work of fiction that really turned out to be your basic, passive aggressive suicide letter. I hated reading this as I felt like I was encouraging the author's suicide as it was so very apparent that she was in so much pain, but as document in regard to psychology, queer representation and or literature I loved some of it but still felt this great guilt in reading this book.

Great book (or horrible book) for the lesbianic love sick. Also make sure to read the afterward.

From behind, you hear a woman talking. Either her companion does not reply, or you don't catch what is said. It is not always easy to understand the main speaker either; there is a lot of talk about love, perhaps love between women, though different partners are mentioned. As most of the proper names are Chinese, you are not sure of the genders. But the speaker is clearly in distress; there are even hints of suicide. Should you intervene? But then the tone changes. You are no longer sure that the speaker is a woman after all. The setting of what s/he is describing is no longer Paris, but Tokyo, or is it Taipei? Several of the same names crop up again. Gradually you guess at a story: a passionate affair, betrayals, separation, reunion, determination, pain.-- "If this book should be published, readers can begin anywhere. The only connection between the chapters is the time frame in which they were written."I admit to buying this solely on account of this unusual challenge (and because I trust NYRB books). There are twenty "letters" in this epistolary novella, although not all of them are in letter form. I used the randomizing function on my computer, and printed out the resultant order to use as a bookmark: 19, 5, 1, 8, and so on. The result was like no other reading experience I have ever had: reading as a matter of immersion rather than following a thread, getting to know the narrator from the inside before I had the slightest idea of her biographical facts. If it does not sound sexist to say so, I would call it a profoundly feminine way of reading, rather than my normal let's-get-on-with-it masculine one.-- "For dead little Bunny / and / Myself, soon dead." Qiu's dedication.Weeks after completing this manuscript, the author, twenty-six-year-old Qiu Miaojin kills herself. Among other things, this novella is her suicide note, turning her death into an artistic statement rather than an act of despair. Already celebrated as a writer in her native Taiwan (especially among feminist and lesbian circles), she has gone to Paris to join the women's studies program run by novelist Hélène Cixous; the book is laced with references to other feminist writers such as Marguerite Yourcenar and Clarice Lispector. And this being Paris, she embraces cinema as high art, following especially the films of Theodoros Angelopoulos and Andrei Tarkovsky. But her main dealings are the interpersonal ones, and most of her writing is about love: love lost, love turned to despair, love persisting against all odds, and just occasionally love at the height of sexual passion. I can't say I enjoyed these passages of self-analysis, which can get quite turgid; I don't know whether to put this down to the translator, Ari Larissa Heinrich, or to the author's own confessional earnestness. All in all, it was a book I enjoyed in concept more than while actually reading.-- "What I desire is the full profundity of eros in my life, the 'eternal'."The eternal takes no account of normal time. Would I have fared better if I had read the chapters in their printed order? I don't think so. About halfway through my reading, I came upon an extraordinary passage of normal exposition, in which the writer lays out her movements and partners in chronological order, with names and places and dates. It explained a lot. But this comes in Letter Fourteen! It is not until quite late that we learn who or what "dead little Bunny" is. And I was able to go for most of the book delightfully perplexed that the narrator (who is never named) occasionally seems to refer to herself as "Zoë" -- but this "Zoë" seems to be female at one moment and male the next! The one chapter that goes any way towards explaining this (and then not completely) is Letter Six -- which is the one I happened to read last, making a neat but entirely accidental "Aha!" ending.-- "As she tested the boundaries between fiction, literary autobiography, and lived practice, the line between life and art grew increasingly indistinguishable for Qiu."This last quotation is from Heinrich's helpful afterword. I am struck by his phrase "lived practice" and its implication that the book in our hands is no more than half Qiu's artistic statement. It may not make for easy reading, but it is a unique product of literary art.

Although it is meant to be an homage to the narrator’s friend who had committed suicide twenty years earlier you cannot help to be constantly drawn to the tale of Leve’s own death at his own hands less than two weeks after he delivered to manuscript to his editor.It is a very similar story with Qiu Miaojin’s work, as our translator, Ari Larissa Heinrich, eloquently says in her afterword:Knowing that an author writing about suicide has in fact committed suicide naturally complicates the reading of any book. If nothing else, it suggests that no matter what the author’s claims may be to artifice or character development, there is a degree of “realism” or autobiography to be accounted for that differs from the range of what usually may be called the “semiautobiographical”.In other words, I’m approaching the last words with a predetermined thought pattern. Ken Uston once again demonstrates why he was the world's foremost authority on the game of blackjack. His playing experiences were both varied and extreme. In this book, he tells stories (some told before) of his playing experiences, and details his ultimately fruitless attempts to get the Nevada Gaming Commission to stop the casino practice of barring card counters. Of note: in this book he disavows his previously touted Uston APC count, stating that it's just too difficult to use effectively, and that simpler systems are probably more effective in the long run. That piece of information alone makes the book worth having, and in this book he suggests which other systems should be used instead.

Most anything written by Ken Uston is good. Filled with stories of blackjack and card counting in the late 70's and early 80's.

Sonia Nazario has published a YA appropriate version of her multiple award winning non-fiction story, Enrique's Journey. It reads like a novel, but is an in-depth look at immigration and its impact on families. It is the story of a young man from Honduras who is desperate to come the USA to find the mother who left when he was 5. Lourdes cannot support her family. Her children are starving. She hopes a job in the US will allow her to send money back to support mother, her children and her sisters. Nazario does a superb job of showing the emotional devastation suffered by both the parents who leave and the abandoned children. Her thoroughly researched story also creates a terrifying picture of how horrific and perilous the journey is. Only people who feel life has no other options for them put themselves in so much danger. Assaults, robberies, starvation, dehydration and deadly accidents are the norm. It takes Enrique seven tries, 122 days and two very close calls with death to finally reach his mother. Both Enrique and Lourdes have unrealistic expectations. After 13 years apart, they are strangers to each other. Enrique is angry. Lourdes is hurt that Enrique doesn't understand it was her loving and heartbreaking sacrifice that kept him alive and in school. Sonia Nazario does not romanticize or white-wash Enrique's story. He is not a hero. Enrique is a sad, lonely young man determined to reunite his family and create a happy life. Enrique's Journey is a testament to the power of family.

Enrique's Journey is a well-written book that keeps the reader totally engaged. Nazario has done much research and presents a well-rounded, factual account of the perils that these children are facings as they flee poverty in Central America and bandits in Mexico. Also explored are the reasons why so many young parents, as well as their children later on, feel the need to endure these hardships (and even death) to reach the U.S. Middle school and high school teachers should encourage their students to read this book, exposing them to real-life and real-time adversity. Spirited debates will probably follow. There is so much that we in the U.S. think we know about problems like this, but until we read a book like Enrique's Journey instead of just watching the news, we'll never have the full story.

An insightful true story. I found that several of my male students had ridden atop Mexican trains and experienced some of these same traumatic events.

I got a little lost with all the statistics and I feel very sad for what illegal immigrants go through to get to the USA. Then finding out that it's not such a perfect place to be like they see on television. The distance between mother and son is also disturbing when they finally meet and I have such compassion for both of them and why they do what they do.

This should be required reading for everyone who wants to take up angry signs and storm buses bring children escaping horrific conditions and find peace. screaming at them to go home. I was so moved by this book that I ended up sponsoring a young man in Honduras, figuring that I can't make a difference in the world, but maybe I can make a difference in this young man's life.

Enrique's Journal reveals real life for mothers who have left their children in a Latino country to find a better world for themselves and their children? How do the children left behind feel? What happens when they decide they must reunite? Americans cannot understand it without reading this book. It should be required reading in grades 9 to 12.

I loved how detailed and descriptive this book was. This story really puts a slap of graciousness on your mind when you read and imagine the struggle people had to go through just to become a citizen of the United States. This is something that we take fore granted but now that I have read this book I will certainly be more grateful for what God has blessed me with.

This is a very enlightening and enriching experience. I felt this was more descriptive than many movie attempts have been at sharing this experience. It provided me with better insight to share with friends and a better perspective of what similar people feel. It is however not to disregard the unsuccessful journeys as they are very valuable and important to improving societal perspective as well.
