Review

"Matthew's prose is a dance between the richness and delicacy of poetry and the bawdy, acerbic wit of a standup comic." - Solas Award winner and Travelers' Tales "The Best Travel Writing, Volume II" contributor Keith Skinner"I found myself captivated by these stories which immersed me in unfamiliar landscapes with poignancy, humor and admiration for the bravery of Matthew Félix to embrace the unknown. The writing is vivid and engaging. It's a fresh take on travel writing. A wonderful read!" - Sarah Bee"With Open Arms is a tasty and intriguing combination of grit, charm and snark. Matthew Felix captures the beautiful, the wild, the bizarre and the mundane with equal skill." - Neal Szpatura"Throughout this short book, the author's love of life, love of humanity, and sometimes startling and almost childlike innocence is on full view, and illuminated by Felix' near poetic phrasing and delight in the use of language." - Amazon reviewer

I don't begrudge someone's savoring their own misfortunes. Especially not, when the quality of the writing is good and the story is somewhat entertaining. Still, Felix appears to have had more problems in his two trips to Morocco then I have experienced in nearly 50 years of independent travel. My wife and I spent 4 weeks rambling around Morocco on our own in 2009 and found the vast majority of locals we met truly kind and hospitable. We visited most and more places than Felix mentions. Yes, there were a few cab drivers that were nearly as dishonest and/or incompetent as we have experienced in Piraeus and Manhattan. There was often a gaggle of dubious characters competing to carry our luggage through a rabbit warren of streets to distant hotels in makeshift carts with bald tires. While backhand commissions to even state licensed tour guides at various shops is a fact of life, we never felt in peril. I had been to Tangier many, many years before in the Navy when it could be a fairly dangerous place-especially if you were looking for trouble, even then we (including my shipmates) weren't mistreated.Felix ends with a few positive comments about the country and people, but it is a bit late. Perhaps he is not as blatantly maligning the country as his very brief Parisian acquaintance. Anyone who reads this book and concludes it is a true picture of the country and its people has been mislead. Even in this day when there are some really bad people in the fringes of the Islamic word, Morocco is one of the safest places to travel. We had some incredibly beautiful meals, met many honorable and exemplary individuals, and I am just sorry that this book goes so close to maligning an entire country based on some unpleasant but mostly minor mishaps.

This is the recounting of two weekend trips, and there is extremely little insght into anything. I wouldn't have put it out there as a book. And it doesn't have enough point to be a short story. The author is just capitalizing on the fact that he knows the travel publishing industry well enough to get such a minimal experience into print.

I found this to be an incredibly enjoyable read - misadventures is a great description as the author brings you along a host of experiences that will have you bursting into laughter - many of the stories contain themes universal to most international travelers - the awkward and challenging arrival, the unforgettable train journey, harassment by locals - it goes on. Reading this makes me want to get up and travel to another country and experience adventure all over again although based on Matthew's experience - I'm not sure whether I'm quite ready for Morocco! A great read - I'd highly recommend this to anyone visiting a new country and travelling a little into the unknown. A great way to get you ready and psyched for a new adventure or misadventure!

An informative read that shows some of the challenges of travelling in Morocco. However, I didn't find the stories to be particularly interesting and it's written in more of an amateur, blog post style than that of truly well written story. It was not bad a book by any means but nor was it great. Would give 3.5* if possible.

Well written stories that should be read by everyone who plans on travelling to Morocco. Sadly, there are a lot of scammers who prey upon everyone. As a woman who has been to Morocco multiple times, I wouldn’t encourage other women to visit Morocco without a male companion. Their customs and views of women are very different than those of Americans and Europeans.

I found myself captivated by these stories which immersed me in unfamiliar landscapes with poignancy, humor and admiration for the bravery of Matthew Félix to embrace the unknown. The writing is vivid and engaging. It's a fresh take on travel writing. A wonderful read!

The stories of the author’s misadventures in Morocco resonate with anyone who has traveled there. I have fortunately also met wonderful people in my travels. But any visitor would do well to read and absorb the lessons. There are also wonderful descriptions of the cities and countries side, and of course of that magical sand dunes of the south.

I had an exciting trip to Morocco through the detailed descriptions Matthew wrote in his book, With Open Arms. I could feel his heart pounding in many of the situations he had to deal with. I have heard of turkish baths but never knew what actually happened to a person. Matthew's story of his "bath" took care of any idea I had of ever enjoying one! Well written, enjoyable, filled with suspense, and educational. Write on Matthew.
