I read this book a while back and really enjoyed it. Note: If you are a creationist, you will doubtless NOT enjoy this. If you are an evolutionist, you'll probably be quite pleased with the book. And there's the pity. For many, the book won't be read on its merits but for whether it supports or challenges one's views on the issue of Darwinian evolutionary theory.In terms of the book itself. . . . The purpose is specified by Jerry Coyne, the author, on page xiv: "This book lays out the main lines of evidence for evolution. For those who oppose Darwinism purely as a matter of faith, no amount of evidence will do--theirs is a belief not based on reason. But for the many who find themselves uncertain, or who accept evolution but are not sure how to argue the case, this volume gives a succinct summary of why modern science recognizes evolution as true."The book unfolds in a straightforward fashion. Chapter 1 summarizes the nature of evolution. He discusses the essence of the concept of evolution--"a species undergoing genetic change over time" (page 3). Also discussed is "natural selection," the process by which the more "fit" individuals tend to be more successful in reproductive terms That is, they leave more offspring than their less fit peers).Subsequent chapters outline the evidence for evolution, including often jury-rigged adaptations (evolution makes do with the organism/species as it exists and often leaves organisms that are poorly designed--but still capable of successful reproduction: think the lower back of humans!), the fossil record, a more detailed discussion of the process of natural selection, the relationship between sex and evolution, how species arise and develop, and--always an issue that excites passion--the relevance of evolution for humankind.The book itself does well what it sets out to do. There are things that bother me. As with many, the author claims that evolution is a "fact." I have never understood this allegation. Neo-Darwinian theory is a THEORY--not a fact. Lots of facts support the theory. By itself, though, it is NOT a fact. I think advocates of evolution shoot themselves in the foot with such an argument. Many, of course, would rejoin, "It's ONLY a theory." Such folks also don't know what they're talking about. A good theory is a great thing! Not "just." Quantum theory is terrific; Einstein's relativity is a fine theory. And so on.All in all, if the reader wants an accessible advocacy of evolutionary theory, this book does the job nicely. If the reader does not accept it, the book, of course, will not be very compelling.

This was a masterpiece - concise yet comprehensive, and very interesting. Even though I majored in a science (chemistry) when I was in university, I learned a great deal. Dr. Coyne makes an unassailable case for the validity of the Theory of Evolution, supporting his statements with evidence from a variety of scientific disciplines. I must add that you definitely don't have to be a scientist to understand it. I'm going to keep this book as my primary reference when I encounter deniers of evolution.

I had to buy this for my college evolution class. I am a Christian who believes evolution is true. Yes, we do exist! Some of the diehard Christians would say I'm not actually Christian for this, but who's to say our Creator did not enable us to evolve? Regardless, that's a whole different argument, but I just wanted to point out that my review is from the point of view of a Christian who believes in evolution.As a whole, I did really like this book. He makes many good points and backs up his points with interesting evidence, some of which I wasn't even aware of, despite being a science student. I found out about midway through my class that I didn't really need to buy this book since my professor would go over the key topics of certain chapters of this book that he wanted to discuss, but I would still find myself reading the chapters myself because I found all the little stories and such that he includes to be very interesting. Normally, like most other college students, if I don't HAVE to read the chapters, I won't! But yet I did with this book. My professor really liked this book as well, though, of course, he got his degree in evolutionary sciences and is friends with Jerry Coyne.The only thing I was opposed to in this book is that sometimes he does go on tangent-like ramblings, usually whenever he was directly trying to discredit Christianity. Not creationism, but Christianity. These rants weren't very often though and can be ignored, but as a Christian it was a bit off-putting. I can perfectly well understand discrediting creationism, but discrediting a whole religion is a bit much, especially when there are others like me who are Christians who believe in evolution. In fact, there was a good number of Christians in my evolution class who had such beliefs.Nevertheless, if you can ignore his tangents like I did(which is the only reason I didn't rate this 5 stars - I would rate it 4.5 stars), then you'll find this book to be a very good read!

This is my second purchase of this book, I got it probably when I was in my late 30's and I'm now in my late 40's and still single (sarcasm) :-)I ordered it again because a former friend borrowed it for me and unfortunately our friendship ended and I would never ask for it back. But I came to miss Marianne - I have found her so wise and often feel this book is sort of a low key kind of study guide. It's by my bedside table and I pick it up now and then to read words of wisdom and or be reminded of something I need to learn. This is the kind of book where you can pick it up and close your eyes, turn to a certain page and what you read? Will help you. A friend's Mom used to do that with the bible and I actually do that with books I find full of wisdom and have come to love like a friend or a favorite pet. I may purchase Marianne's from Tears to Triumph but for now? I'll enjoy thumbing through this and keep it by my nightstand - oh and NO more lending this book out!

I feared religion, feared succumbing to the opiate of the masses. The word "God" troubled me, even while I sought a deeper spirituality. Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit... I blindly closed my mind to anything in Christian terms. But I was fortunate enough to pick up this book at a time in my life when I was beginning to shed many of my judgements, and consider faith not by how others may abuse it or be shackled by it, but how it might empower me to find a deeper happiness. It all started with me re-stumbling upon a quote I read five years ago on how we feared not our inadequacy, but our strength. And it ended up with me finishing this book minutes ago and my mind screeching to a halt, "What? It's over? I need more!" Only the whole point of the book was telling me I don't need to read more, I just need to act on what resonated with me from the words so recently imbibed.I rather doubt I'll ever consider myself Christian. But when you translate the concept of God from a bearded Old Testament crotchety and vengeful powerhouse to the raw and unadulterated purity of love... I don't need to read the Bible to find answers. When the idea of Jesus isn't so much the one and only Son of God, but a state of grace each and everyone of us can become through the shedding of fear... I can relate. When the word Christ is us used to speak to the fact that all of us are connected, rather than a fixation on crucifixion... I can open my mind a crack more. And the concept of the Holy Spirit as the guiding force that allows us to replace fear and its derivatives with love for ourselves and one another... alright, finally Christianity makes at least a lick of sense.Does everything in these pages resonate to me? I'm not sure, but it doesn't need to. The whole point as there is no single right answer, beyond the fact that love is always the right answer. But going to church on Sunday, believing in Jesus, living a life of abstaining from all physical joys or looking upon others or ourselves with judgement and shame... not a prerequisite to finding wisdom in these pages. I would finish a chapter, and the whole world would seem to make more sense. Colors looked better, and I would sink into a feeling of peace is never felt before. The book calls my shift in perception a miracle. I don't think I'm capable of disagreeing on that point. As the author says, this is only the beginning, not the destination. I don't know if I'll read or undertake A Course in Miracles, but I do know that this companion, this interpretation, has changed my world for the better.

So I am not finished with this book yet (about 70% of the way) but I felt like I needed to write a review today because I got to a point in the book where things started to go a bit sideways.I was recommended this book by someone, and I think the underlying message of the book is quite powerful. It basically teaches you to let go, focus on your inner light, aka your love, and let the rest happen as it will. I think this does wonders to curb your anxiety, and in a world were we are constantly bombarded with the collective neurosis that we constantly need to be "doing" and "making things happen," this offers a refreshingly saner perspective. It is counter-intuitive at times how, by letting things unfold as they will, we often get the things we so wanted as a by-product of focusing on our own inner light and bringing love to the world around us. This is where the message of this book is powerful.This book does use Christian theology as the way to explain this process. So it is based a lot on faith and prayer. As an atheist, I was able to overlook this and re-frame some of this as thinking about it in terms of the universe, and allowing the universe to unfold as it will. I don't particularly believe in prayer, but again I was able to overlook this in order to follow the message of the book, which really is about love.However, things got a bit sideways around Chapter 8. The author makes several claims, without citing any sources or studies:1. That the pill that the doctor gives us only heals us because we believe it heals us.2. That holistic medicine is just as effective in treating cancer as traditional medicine, because it is the patient's mental and emotional interaction with his treatment that activates the healing power.3. That when the cure for AIDs is finally found, we will give prizes to a few scientists, but many of us will know that millions and millions of prayers helped it happen.Especially the last one made me yell "Bullshit!" so loud that I am pretty sure I woke my neighbors. First of all, the author provides no evidence to back up the exceptional statements she makes. I don't see any studies or sources which can confirm her rather bold statements. As Hitchens said rather succinctly, "Exceptional claims demand exceptional evidence, and that which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence."In the US especially where anti-scientific attitude is pervasive (see: anti-vaxxers) her words here are actually quite dangerous. I really hope they don't lead people down the wrong path, and that people go to qualified medical professionals for their illnesses rather than try and pray themselves to health.So the book, which uses primarily Christian theology to explain the idea of love, unfortunately also suffers from the insanity of Christian theology in the belief that prayer can cure something like AIDs.Has this book overall been helpful to me, personally? I would say yes, it has. There is beauty and positivity in focusing on giving love and paying attention to your inner light. However, I would only recommend this book with a warning clause that some of the statements made by the author suffer from the archaic (and potentially dangerous) thinking that plagues most theologies.*edit: After finishing the book I still stand by my original review. One thing I wanted to add is that I have been using the “prayers” from the book (I just make them secular) as they seem to be a good way to ease anxiety and emotions when faced with difficult events or thoughts. Coupled with meditation it’s a good way to cope in harder times. The methods in this book are quite good in that regard; reframing your thoughts.

So far I love it. I have been a MW fan for two decades. I am really "working" the program. It contains 14 Lessons. Of hand it mentions that it is a lesson per day. The first lesson has taken me a month to date and I still have a few more words to work through. There are a list of emotions to release. You are supposed to choose those that apply. Of course, they all apply. I spend about 30 minutes journaling on each. I do one word per day. There are about 28 words. After a couple of weeks I realized I was doing the mental work but not the emotional release. Now I am going back over the list and really allowing myself to feel the feelings, express them (privately), surrender them. It is really working. I am feeling it lift off my shoulders. I have been able to modify my diet.

However, there’s a certain intrinsic quality in the writing of this genre that is required to do it in a coherent interesting manner which garners the interests of readers and to keep it, and the author of this book, Ryan Becker [and anyone involved with him] is one such True Crimes author capable of doing it consistently.In this volume of Murderous Minds, Mr. Becker, gives his readers a collection of six manipulative individuals who had used their skills to have their gullible individuals fall prey in whatever they wanted them to believe; such as having an entire community believing she had the uncanny psychic ability of foretelling the demise of others, while in reality covering up the murders she had committed with arsenic. With a glorified belief they were doing something good, these apparent “brainwashed” individuals, would up committing immeasurable actions fraught with sheer wickedness and ferocity.For having given his readers another well-constructed collection of True Crime stories, I happy to give Mr. Becker 5 STARS from this aficionado of this genre of books.

Mr Becker always delivers in depth research and delivers true crime at its best. This doesn't disappoint and the fact that I hadn't heard about his subjects in this novel makes it even more interesting.He always tends to leave me wondering what the next true crime novel will be about because this one is exceptional.

A thrilling rollercoaster ride that's hard to put down, so don't read too late or you'll miss beauty sleep. Information that will stun & make you wonder why you didn't hear about them before. Wow, the human psyche of some people!!!.

Ryan has a way of delivering a story that you remember. I can watch countless interviews on this subject matter, documentaries and read other books but the only knowledge I ever really end up remembering comes from Ryan’s books.

I loved this book because it was a book about murderers that I’ve never heard of. Usually it’s the same ones over & over. Ryan Becker is great at what he does! I love all of his books!

Another great book by Ryan Becker, more criminals that I had never heard of. Always wonder what goes on in the minds of killers. I think it will always be a mystery. Enjoy his books very much.

Ryan Becker's books aren't just dry facts, but they don't include a lot of unnecessary fluff either. Good reading for any true crime follower.

Yet another well written book by Ryan. It is simply written no fluff. He sticks to the facts and provides new perceptions on old cases.
