A very balanced, comprehensive book - theory and practical - about everything important to know and beyond in private equity. The style is vivid, extremely sophisticated and people contributing to this book are legends, the Who is Who in Private Equity. As to my opinion there is no better read in the market about private equity in its entirety. 'Private Equity in Action' complements this issue very well.

Read it first quickly then deeply with the companion book “private equity in action”, you are like attending a great course and become versatile in many aspects of private equity. Well organized great content, references are really useful, although some of the hyperlinks are broken (editor, please fix!). Post grad or middle level industry people will enjoy.

Well written and excellent book that delves into the world of private equity on a level that beginners as well as seasoned veterans of private equity can understand. This book goes in depth into areas of understanding PE deals, Levered Buyouts, and so much more. It's a must read.

Very thorough and useful book, especially for new hires in PE and VC firms. Each chapter has just the right amount of information and detail and provides a very good understanding of the differing incentives and structures within the industry.

Good read. Topics were easy to understand and materials covered were thorough

Detailed and easy to read

A very good intro book into PE. It covers top-level almost all aspects of PE and provides a good general view on what is happening in the industry. Some particular areas, eg the mechanics of how PE delivers returns, are covered in detail. Also, the book contains a lot of comments and thoughts from senior PE people, which is a great opportunity to understand how they think. Finally, the book has many data and references to the most recent studies and industrial reports, which provides a fresh look on the factual side of the the industry. The book is used for PE classes at INSEAD.

This is a great read for those wanting a comprehensive overview of how private equity works, from doing deals, to post-money value creation, to fund raising, to LP strategies, etc. In my view, it has just the right amount of detail for its overview purpose, providing references/links to resources for more detail. I use it as an exercise prize for ANDE's Investment Management Training course and it's always well-received. There won't be much here for established PE hands, but great resource for newbies and those needing to round out their PE understanding. I enjoyed it myself!

Emergency Contact, by Mary H. K. Choi

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—This debut novel examines modern relationships in the age of smart phones. Penny Lee leaves behind her humdrum high school years and meets her new college roommate Jude, who introduces Penny to her tattooed, mysterious, and sexy young uncle, Sam. After a strange chance encounter, Sam and Penny become each other's emergency contact. Choi creates an up-to-date and realistic contemporary romance by upending the love story trope. Miscues and miscommunications, which often propel romantic plots forward, are replaced by open and constant screen-to-screen communication. The tension exists in the development of the relationship, starting with just texts, and evolving to a multi-platform, "in real life" friendship. In alternating chapters, Penny and Sam reveal their innermost thoughts. Choi explores love, family issues, identity, loneliness, and acceptance in the context of 24/7 social media. Despite the ever-present contact, deeply connecting with another human being remains remarkably difficult. Choi creates another layer of meaning by addressing the microaggressions that Penny, who is Korean American, faces. The protagonist's response is handled deftly. An internal monologue includes a multiple-choice list of potential reactions to external situations that will ring true with readers and make them appreciate Penny's wry sense of humor and direct approach. VERDICT A highly recommended purchase for the teens who enjoy realistic relationship fiction. Recommended for fans of Nicola Yoon's Everything, Everything and Rainbow Rowell's Eleanor & Park.—Eva Thaler-Sroussi, Needham Free Public Library, MA

Review

“Mary H.K Choi’s Emergency Contact is one of the best debuts of the year and one of the first YA novels to really capture the depth and complexities of a text-based relationship.” (The Globe and Mail)* "Choi sensitively shows the evolution of two lonely, complicated people who slowly emerge from their shells to risk an intimate relationship. Her sharp wit and skillful character development...ensure that readers will feel that they know Penny and Sam inside and out before the gratifying conclusion." (Publisher's Weekly - starred review January 1, 2018)"Smart and funny, with characters so real and vulnerable, you want to send them care packages. I loved this book."    (Rainbow Rowell, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Fangirl)* "Choi creates an up-to-date and realistic contemporary romance by upending the love story trope....A highly recommended purchase for the teens who enjoy realistic relationship fiction. Recommended for fans of Nicola Yoon’s Everything, Everything and Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor & Park." (School Library Journal - starred review February 1, 2018)"Readers will swoon over Emergency Contact. Choi has a knack for creating relatable characters, and this quirky, socially awkward love story will keep your cheeks rosy with every page....Emergency Contact is the perfect book for those who root for the underdog and believe that broken people can heal together." (RT Book Reviews March 1, 2018)"Blushingly tender and piquant...Choi... inserts timely issues like sexual assault, cultural appropriation and even DACA into her characters’ intimate conversations, but it is her examination of digital vs. F2F communication that feels the most immediate." (The New York Times Book Review March 2, 2018)"Readers who enjoyed the unorthodox evolution of romance in Nicola Yoon’s Everything, Everything (2015) will like this debut novel." (Booklist March 7, 2018)"Penny somehow broke down all my walls. Her tech became incidental and her voice endearing, and just like that, I was hooked. Even the texts feel very natural and elegantly woven into the narration. There is much more to both Sam and Penny than quirky character traits and witty repartee....While the story does traffic in the heart flutter of romance that is tantalizingly out of reach, its emotional core goes deep."   (NPR March 29, 2018)"Whip-smart, hilarious and poignant...Choi's prose is to be savored....Along with the biting wit and sharp observations, Choi's marvelous novel offers a perceptive exercise on the divide between digital and in-person communication - and how daunting it can be to 'escalate' to that face to face encounter." (The Buffalo News March 29, 2018)"A tender, texting-based teen romance." (Entertainment Weekly)

6 out of 5 stars. This is the kind of book I can only review by fangirl screaming in all caps. It's just embarrassing.I would have loved it just for the characters-I'm a sucker for deep vulnerability, or writer characters, or guys named Sam, or tattoos, or guys who bake, or friends to lovers, so really this book was a buffet platter of favorites for me. I would have loved it just for the voice: super witty and down to earth and contemporary feeling. The scent descriptions were hilarious (a gas station rose that smells like printer cartridges) and the descriptions in general were so creative, unique and THATYESTHAT that I was highlighting like crazy and I read like 20 of them out loud to my husband (like "a guy with a face like a weak handshake"). Even if it weren't for those things, I would have loved this book for the very meta story within a story that the MC was writing-a story that underlines and flips and then flips again the themes of the book so you don't know if Penny is trapped in her digital world and waiting to be brought out, or if she's choosing to ignore her real world, or if her digital world really is better, or if the relationship is about her and her boyfriend or her and her mom...it's brilliant at every step, and the mom/Penny argument at the end was crazy amazing. It sounded so much like people I've known, and I could really see both people's perspectives.Sam was an utter delight, and at times I just hurt because I liked him and Penny so much. I want to buy another 10 books by this author immediately and I'm so sad there aren't yet ten more books to buy. I read this one in half a day and now I'm stuck wishing there was more.

Penny Lee heads off to college and leaves behind a lot of things that she just could not relate to or even like. Her mother is a MILF and that drives her crazy. She has a boyfriend that is the polar opposite of her, that would probably thrill any other girl in their high school, but not Penny. Penny is different. When she meets her roommate’s “uncle” Sam at the coffee shop, there is something that draws her to him. Maybe it’s his curly hair or all his tattoos. She happens to be on the scene when he suffers from a panic attack (he is sure it is a heart attack) and helps him through it. She becomes his emergency contact. That starts a string of text messages that evolve throughout the story.Sam is dealing with his on/off girlfriend. They go through a few things which you will have to read to find out about but he finds himself wanting to talk to Penny more than anyone. The texts become phone calls and then evolve into much more. Will they realize what it is they both really want?I have read a few books that were told in texts or emails but what I really loved about this one is that it wasn’t only that. The texts were like the icing on the cake because we learned so much about them throughout the whole book, not just in their messages. They were the cutest couple and if you do not root for them to get together, I wonder if you even have a soul. I admit I almost cheered when Penny’s facade started to crack a little. I admit I cried when she would open up to other people, her fear was so palpable. This is just such a lovely book and I am so glad that I saw someone on one of my online book groups rave about it.

Alright. OK. So I'm definitely in the minority here. Wow...read some brutal reviews out there on this book, which truly surprised me. I did not feel this much negativity or dislike when reading this book at all. In fact, I felt it was one of the most honest representations of teenagers, girls, daughters, students, white girls, and non-white girls.I really enjoyed reading this book, and have it categorized as one of my favorites this year. I'm sorry other readers felt so differently towards it. Is Penny annoying, well of course she is. She's meant to be, but throughout the book you start to discover more about why she is the way she is. I completely understand her inability to show emotion, even though she's one big ball of emotion on the inside, because I'm like that. Being originally Korean, I loved the references to the subtle racist remarks she gets on a regular basis, because again, as an Arab, and a Muslim, I get that ALL the time. And people think it's OK, because it's subtle, or because it's said as a joke, but you know what? No, it's not OK, and I love that Penny stands up for that. Was Penny slut-shaming her mom? I don't believe she was, I believe she was simply saying it as it is. Her mom is a mess. Her mom is a MILF. She's hot, she dresses so much younger than her age, is a huge flirt, and is dating guys left and right. And yes, if that was my mom, I'd be embarrassed as hell to be seen around her. That's just the truth. To get hospitalized for drug use, I would probably walk away from that in anger and disappointment as well. But you know what? It's not all bad. Because throughout the book, the character development was on point. All the characters, including secondary characters, were well-rounded. You see them develop as the story unfolds, you see Penny maturing, opening up, making friends, trusting more, and even forgiving her mom, asking for forgiveness and letting her in. There is redemption and change there, and it's not all one-sided either. But let's focus on Penny and Sam for a minute, because that was center stage and it was absolutely beautiful to read their story and how it unfolds. I loved that it was another story that relied hugely on digital communication, and it was done so well. Their conversations were amazing, their friendship, their support of each other was beautiful to read about. I loved the transition from texts to phone calls, to face to face - to at one point, an email. Oh my Lord, that email was everything. They both have a lot of issues. Serious issues. They were able to really open up to each other, and maybe a huge part of that is the digital wall that separated them. It was easy to open up to this person as long as it they never had to face each other, right?Except things don't always work out that way, and things do get complicated, and their lives are quite miserable - especially Sam's - but it's all part of the journey, and I never felt repelled by it. I thought Penny was very endearing, especially when she started opening up, and I loved how so much honestly was crammed into this book, giving you a face palm of reality.

Funny witty and poignant, Mary H.K. Choi writes characters that curl up in your consciousness and stay forever. Hard to put down, and even harder to finish because you won't want to say goodbye....

The texting banter and character complexity are sooooooo good. There are so many swoony moments and hilarious lines of dialogue and narrative. I loved it.Content warning: there is a discussion about a rape.

If you're interested in this, you are probably a political science or international relations student, which is a shame because very few general readers would pick this up, and it's those who need it the most, this really deserves to be a best-seller. I majored in biochemistry and am an indie game developer, never took a single class in political science, but on a friend's recommendation who was majoring in that I read this book, and I've re-read it several times over the years, and it's become one of my favorite books (certainly in my top 10 of nonfiction).Basically, this book presents an overarching theory of why wars exist, one that is precise enough to allow even uninformed readers to make predictable, and historically accurate, and precise predictions about when a country will go to war (and why). Most people believe wars to happen for one of several reasons -- "human nature" (because humans just like fighting and are inherently violent or stupid or something), or perhaps the war over religion and ideology, or perhaps over resources. I'd guess that almost everyone believes war happens for one of those reasons. This book dispels that notion very cleanly and completely. After you read it, you'll realize that nations go to war simply because they are afraid. They know that if they lose a war against a greater power, their nation is done for -- it will become occupied, or a puppet state, of a greater power, and lose whatever power they had. Nations do not want that to happen, they are terrified of being dominated by greater nations. And this is a systematic thing, no individual might consciously decide on this, but this is how all nations do seem to work: they are afraid of being conquered, so they go to war to make sure they are the one who conquer, not the one being conquered. This central notion that fear of being conquered by another nation, and not anything else, drives almost all war is the main thesis of the book, and it's argued for very convincingly, with a lot of historical examples. So, the first way a country can be certain it's not going to be conquered by its neighbors is to become the strongest power in its major landmass -- the regional hegemon. Most nations in a position to do so will try to gain regional power -- that is what China is doing in asia, that's what the US did the Americas, and that's what various european countries (e.g. England, France, the Dutch, the Germans, the Russians) have attempted to do for europe, and so on.By this thesis, it may seem counter-intuitive, but according to this idea, the reason Germany went to war was not because they were nationalistic or inherently violent, or because of the ideological differences between fascism, capitalism, and communism, or because wanted to purify Europe of undesirable races, or even that they were angry over the conditions imposed on them after WW1 (though that's part of it), but simply because Germany feared being conquered and wanted to become the most powerful nation in Europe to make sure they would survive. This is a *very* different understanding of war than most people have, I want to emphasize that again. And it sounds strange at first, but this book will probably convince you of it (as evidence, Germany in WW1 had a very different ideology, but the conditions were somewhat similar, and they still went to war, for the same reason they did go to war in WW2. Sometimes WW1 is blamed on entangling alliances or the assassination of an archduke, but, in reality, according to this theory, Germany went to war in WW1 for the exact same reason they want to war in WW2, because they saw an opportunity to become local hegemon of Europe, and took that opportunity). If you still aren't convinced, that isn't of course the job of this review, it's the job of the book; the number of examples used in the book far exceed would I could bring up here. And the author's writing is much better than mine in any case. I'm just trying to explain why I like the book: because it gives you a different opinion of war than the usual one, and does so very convincingly, through factual argument, and explains it in a simple to understand way (you don't need to have even taken a political science course to follow along with the argument).

The Tragedy of Great Power Politics is an accessible history of great power behavior since the 18th century. John Mearsheimer is a professor at the University of Chicago. Mearsheimer believes that once countries become economically strong they seek to dominate their region militarily. They “are always searching for opportunities to gain power over their rivals, with hegemony as their final goal.” He calls this “offensive realism.” In the final chapter, he discusses the rise of China and predicts that it will attempt to dominate Asia. He believes that this will lead to conflict with the US.To prove his theory, Mearsheimer examines the behavior of five countries over the last 200 years: Japan (1868-1945), Germany (1862-1945), Soviet Union (1917-1991), Britain (1792-1945), and the U.S. (1800-1990). Japan and the Soviet Union provide strong support for the theory. Before WW2 Japan was imperialistic and invaded Korea, China, and the Soviet Union. Its attempts to become an Asian hegemon inevitably led to its clash with the U.S. Russia has always been an imperialistic power and over the centuries expanded its empire from Europe to the Pacific coast. During the Soviet era, it grabbed Eastern Europe.Germany is an example of how offensive realism can lead to disaster. After reunification in 1871, Germany started to flex its muscles and frighten its neighbors. By 1900 it had overtaken Britain to become Europe's largest economy. Russia, France, and Britain initially formed a defensive alliance, but this did not deter Germany, it just became more paranoid. Mearsheimer argues that it was inevitable that a powerful Germany would try to dominate Europe. However, historians like Margaret MacMillan believe that war could have been avoided had Bismarck still been around. Unfortunately for Germany, Japan, and the Soviet Union, they were not allowed to dominate for long. They became victims of their own ambition and this seems to be the main weakness of offensive realism as a survival strategy.Britain is not a good fit for Mearsheimer's theory. It was never interested in dominating Europe. It controlled 59% of global wealth in 1860 but it never tried to conquer Europe. Mearsheimer claims that the English Channel made invasion too difficult. However, Britain's traditional strategy was to contain potential threats by manipulating either Germany or France. This did not stop Britain aggressively grabbing territory in parts of the world where it faced little or no opposition.Mearsheimer claims that Britain was too weak to stop the U.S. taking over its Caribbean colonies in the 19th century. Apparently, the U.S. resisted the temptation to invade because the British colonies kept slaves. He does not seem aware that Britain ended slavery long before the U.S. The main reason the US did not attack was Britain's navy. For much of the 19th century, the U.S. lacked the military strength to prevent European intervention in the New World. But since European meddling threatened British as well as American interests, the Monroe Doctrine was enforced by the Royal Navy. At the end of the 19th century, America could deploy two battleships to Britain’s forty-four.Mearsheimer describes the U.S. as the "poster child for offensive realism." Mearsheimer sets out a narrative to explain how American foreign policy developed over the centuries. He argues that it first dominated the Western Hemisphere before extending its reach to Asia and Europe. The invasion of Canada in 1812 and the Monroe Doctrine were part of a plan to dominate the Americas. Once that was achieved the U.S. stopped Japan and Germany dominating Asia and Europe in the 20th century. The U.S. continued to view the British Empire as a threat and Roosevelt set about dismantling it during WW2. Once WW2 was won, the Soviet Union became America’s new adversary and it maintained forces in Europe to check Soviet expansion, but also to prevent the Europeans from fighting each other.Mearsheimer argues that the U.S. is often in denial about its behavior and Americans are taught that the U.S. is altruistic and a force for good in the world. Mearsheimer states that “idealist rhetoric provided a proper mask for the brutal policies that underpinned the tremendous growth of American power.” In 1991 the U.S. became the world's only super-power and according to Mearsheimer, its main foreign policy objective was to prevent the re-emergence of a new rival. Following the difficult wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the U.S. is less certain of its global role. Mearsheimer claims that America's foreign policy elite is still largely made up of offensive realists, but these days they prefer to keep their views under wraps.Mearsheimer believes that the rise of China brings a new set of problems. America is facing its first serious economic competitor since it overtook Britain in the 19th century. He predicts that China will pose a threat to U.S. dominance in Asia. Mearsheimer is worried that if nationalists in China continue to pursue a policy of "Asia for the Asians" this will make future conflict inevitable.I found the book an enjoyable read but Mearsheimer has a surprisingly superficial grasp of world history. However, he does provide a helpful explanation of American foreign policy over the past 200 years. It is clear that the world will always be a dangerous place and America will continue to attract rivals trying to knock it off its pedestal.

"If we taught children to speak, they'd never learn" - William HullThirty or forty years ago, I read this quote. It stuck with me because i believe we often learn best through imitation. In many of my books I have advised that mimicry is prerequisite to creativity. It's wonderfully effective to imitate, copy, or trace what others have done in order to develop one's own tools for drawing before attempting to produce something original.

I bought this for my 11 year old but my 6 year old took right to drawing with these books. I was impressed with how well he was able to follow the steps so that his end product was recognizable as what it should be. My older child has not worked with the Draw 50 books yet but I plan to buy more for my 6 year old's birthday.

I bought this as a gift for my 12 year old niece who loves to draw. She was very excited to get it. My only complaint is that the drawings are very faint and somewhat hard to see.

Purchased as a birthday gift for my dad and he really liked it. He loves to draw and doodle and this book is easy enough for a beginner, but also helps to hone any artist's skill. Good variety of objects to draw as well. Draw 50 is a nice series of books.

Purchased for my Grandson that is interested in drawing. He LOVED it ... which means Grammie loved it to! It was easy for him to follow and his drawings were absolutely amazing. He turned 10 on his birthday - for reference for child age. I will be looking to them for another book when he is finished with this one.

I bought this draw book for my 9 year old daughter. She has recently took a liking to drawing everything lately. She loves it. Each page has different instructions that are really easy to follow. with 50 different pictures this will keep my daughter entertained for a long time.

Excellent art, strange combination. This book includes a majority animals (28), with mostly characters on the remaining pages (17). The rest are modes of transportation, structures and a few random other items like pumpkins and flowers. I'm sure my 10 year old nephew will love it. Just not so sure the characters are relevant or recognizable anymore. I remember many of the designs and characters from when I was young in the 80s. Still, there is much to be learned from sketching these characters. I do not recommend this book for younger artists as many of the designs are either complex or scary. Good quality book in great condition, fast shipping with prime.

Takes practice especially for proportions. But I was pleasantly surprised how some things turned out. I'm no artist but it's fun to do.

I bought this for my 9 year-old granddaughter's birthday, along with some nice charcoal pencils and a drawing pad. It shows, step-by-step how to begin drawing so many things! From animals, people, places, cartoon characters, and even aliens! She loves it and it helps her drawing. She's pretty talented with her drawing and it helps give her some basics!
