I bought both this book (Pilates: Body in Motion by Alycea Ungaro) and The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler and I'm glad that I bought both.For me, a total beginner at Pilates who is taking 1 beginner mat group class a week at a local Pilates studio, I needed something to guide me at home so that I could do Pilates workouts several times a week.I think that Pilates: Body in Motion is better for learning the exercises because the photos are better and they show the whole sequence. But I have also found that if I read both books' descriptions of a particular exercise that I get the benefit of 2 of the most highly respected Pilates trainers in the world. So it's a win/win to have both books. Also, instead of doing the same Modified Beginner or Beginner sequence each time from one of the books, I can alternate days by doing the Modified Beginner/Beginner in the other book. That gives me some variety.. although they are, of course, similar.The long and the short of it is.... I highly recommend both books and am very glad that I purchased both.The other thing that I use regularly is the DVD Pilates Workout for Dummies with Michelle Dozois. I bought several beginner Pilates DVDs and that is my favorite. My 2nd favorite is Hilary Burnett's Pilates Basics which is short, but very very good for beginners. She also has an Intermediate level DVD which I am not ready for... yet.

I've used a couple of DVDs to learn Pilates (no, I can't afford classes) and they just did not inspire me to keep with the routine. I've been using this book for just a few days but I find that #1 I like a book better because I can go at my own pace and there is no annoying music or shrill instructor's voice and #2 the book has a refreshing lack of motivational yada-yada and instead goes on the assumption that you CAN do it, and since you bought the book you already WANT to do it.The photos are clear and understandable and I also appreciated the breathing instructions, the Cautions (for example, "If you experience back pain while holding your legs up...") and the Visualizations ("Imagine molding your body into the shape of a tremendous horseshoe"). Each exercise includes a photo of what you may be doing incorrectly, and a "Head-to-toe checklist". The emphasis is on doing each exercise as perfectly to form as possible and becoming strong and controlled; not on doing more, faster, or how skinny you're supposed to get.All the exercises are for the mat or the wall, so no equipment or gadgets are needed, either. Great book!!

I have recently started out with practicing Pilates, thinking that as a dancer it would help with my strength and form (and I also have a weak back and degenerative disk disease, which means that I had to stop pounding myself on the pavement with running). This manual was suggested by many other readers when I was seeking a good instructional book on Pilates. I had already purchased Michelle Dozois' "Pilates for Dummies" DVD, which was my very first introduction to Pilates, and I got through the basics and some of the intermediate moves okay, so I figured it was time to graduate to a more detailed instructional resource. Alycea Ungaro's manual is well-written, with high-quality color photographs of models executing each exercise in perfect form (something I still have yet to work on with the advanced moves). I am already doing the advanced routine (albeit not in full extension for some of the moves, as they are very challenging and require much longer conditioning), but I push myself to struggle through it until I can achieve each exercise with just as perfect form. I've substituted my original treadmill climbing and weights workout for Pilates over the past month, and am already seeing results in my core strength and posture. My back felt strained after the initial introductory workouts to Pilates, but I'm getting stronger and feeling less of that strain after each workout. Overall, I would strongly recommend this manual for a beginning student of Pilates, as it is the clearest and most concise guide out there, I'm sure...although, I am still purchasing Brooke Siler's 2 manuals just for comparison and to see if any new challenging exercises are offered in her books.

A pilates instructor is a must, no book will replace an instructor. Hence, if you are a pilates beginner that is training with an instructor, this book is a fantastic addition to your home routine. It provides excellent tips and the pictures really depict each single important movement for each pilates exercise. It has three levels, beginner, intermediate and advanced. So positions for each level are carefully explained. This is critical, if you are a beginner and you are in great shape (in pilates means that you are flexible for deep stretching), you might be able to do the same exercise in a complete different position than someone who is a beginner and is not flexible enough. The book shows all the positions for these three levels of body flexibility. Although the pictures show the models exercising in yoga mats, it is not a good idea to practice in a yoga mat. Use a good quality folding mat (even more if you have a lean body structure).

Others have gone into great detail why this is such a great book, but the thing I really found useful is that it not only shows you what to do, it shows what you look like when you're doing an exercise improperly. Not everyone learns well from anti-patterns, but I found the pictures of the right and wrong ways to do an exercise especially helpful.I'm currently on my third copy of this book- not because it has worn out, because I keep giving to other people as a gift. It really is the best available book for learning how to do Mat Pilates exercises. It's not only well written, it's also well designed and well edited, with great layout and indicies.

The book arrived in great condition. I have the paperback, don’t know if there’s a hardcover version. The front cover has a glossy look - and it does really well in keeping finger prints away - unless your hands are oily (i imagine). The size is just right for collection and study. I have the 2013 edition and It has a mix of old pictures and new. The old pictures are a bit blurry for todays time. I only wish the examples were done with blue and white gi to separate the subjects easily. The text has good design and spacing - instructions are easy to follow. Information is not crammed in a page. Translation in English is well done and straight forward.

This book is an outstanding reference containing such vital concepts and techniques as nage waza (throwing techniques), shime waza (choking/strangulation techniques), atemi waza (vital point techniques), and kansetsu waza (joint locking techniques). Randori (free sparring), kata (forms), and goshin jutsu (self-defense techniques) are covered. There is also some interesting history about how jujutsu became judo, the principles and aims of Kodokan judo, and training basics (e.g., gi, etiquette, postures/stances, moving and turning, breakfall techniques, the principle of continuous attack, and professor Kano's history and chronology). Since many judo applications can render an opponent unconscious, vital kappo (resuscitation techniques) are also included Some of the pictures are outstanding while others, mostly historical items relating to kata and a few of the throws, are very difficult to decipher. Regardless, no text no matter how well written and illustrated can substitute for professional hands-on instruction. If you have already seen these applications demonstrated on the dojo floor, the book is more than adequate as a reference source -- in fact I'd call it ideal. This is THE textbook on Judo. Every judoka must have it. Almost every technique is presented here (there are some that were part of the original Judo that latter were banned, so they don't appear here) and is explained and photographed. Some photographs are a bit blurry (particularly those with Kyuzo Mifune on, although I don't recall credit be given to anyone on the photos, but you know it's him because they also appear in his book "The Canon of Judo"), but most of them do show what is supposed to be done.This book was written by the creator of Judo, it is not perfect but definitely a must for every practitioner.

I use this book in my teaching of JUDO.It has the information for all throws, falls, kata, etc.I recommend it to all Judoka's

This is THE book of Judo. It contains everything you need to know for learning Judo from a qualified instructor. It does cover aitimi waza, or striking techniques, but most Judoka ignore that aspect of the art, and concentrate solely on the sport aspect. Too bad. Still, the striking techniques are there, if you are willing to work with a good, knowledgeable instructor, on the katas. The katas are where the really devastating techniques are practiced. For anyone who doubts that, try speeding up Nage No Kata, using a crash mat for Uke! Be warned: speeding up any Kata, is dangerous! The techniques are devastatingly effective, and dangerous, unless they are done slowly. (Sandan Judo, Sandan Ju-Jitsu) Cheers!

Great work from the master. Excellent show of techniques. Sequential photos of each technique. Clarified a lot of my questions. I use it as a reference against Jiu jitsu books because of similarities.

Although other books may offer more variations and flashier presentations, herein can be found all the rudiments of Kodokan judo. If the subject interests you at all, you simply must own this book. With judo's popularity on the rise (even professional mixed martial artists, typically reliant on either wrestling or Brazilian jiu-itsu, have begun to reevaluate judo and its usefulness in the combative context), no serious student of the martial arts can afford to ignore Kano's work, and this book is the gateway to understanding that work.

I started using this book and I also purchased her videos from her t-tapp website. I will tell you that I have lost a few pounds over the last month and 1/2, but I have lost almost 20 inches!!! This is incredible for me. I actually gained a few pounds when I very first started. I think it was my body going into shock and holding water - that has since past (hang in there if this happens to you!). I H.A.T.E. to exercise!!! Have I mentioned I HATE to exercise???!!! It hurt to exercise, and in most videos that I have found, some of the moves were just agonizing for me and my joints. Now granted, I am not too terribly old (45), but I have neglected myself for years due to I felt there was nothing (exercise wise) out there for me. UNTIL I found t-tapp. I started with this book and the DVD in the back, then I ordered the Basic Workout Plus. I did that 14 days straight. Then I did it every other day for a week and half. I ordered Stepping Away the Inches and started using that between 3rd-4th week and WOW what a difference! She goes step by step on how you need to do the full muscle activations during the session. This helped me with my posture and form. This is when the inches really started coming off. I am down a size in pants but 2 sizes in most shirts. I have pecs now--- I have never had those, even when I was in HS when I lifted weights. Go figure! This is the first WO series that I have seen results and felt better! I will be purchacing more videos. If you are looking for a fitness program that you can stick with, this one is it. If you are looking for a program that is `gentle on joints, no extra weights, and enjoyable for kids up to 100 year olds - this is it! You can modify it, you can change it up, you can make it work for you. Please try this! I am NOT paid to write this review, I am an excited customer who found a wonderful, honest program!

After four children I was tired, out-of-shape, and feeling pretty hopeless that I would ever have the time or energy to be fit again. T-Tapp changed all that. Not only did I reshape my body in fifteen minutes a day but several old injuries started to rehabilitate. My posture improved. My energy improved.It's now been 6 years since I discovered T-Tapp and I still am convinced it's the best thing out there. This book is incredibly inspiring and will help you believe that Yes You Can! I highly recommend it to anyone who is short on time, short on energy, has inflammation or injuries. I have gotten more relief and rehabilitation from T-Tapp than I have from several physical therapists, chiropractors, and massage therapists. Worth every penny.

It sounds too good to be true, but it is true! I bought this book along with the Barefoot basic + DVD. After only 2 weeks, I have lost 13.5"! 5 of those inches were off of my stomach! I recommend getting both the book and a DVD. The dvd that comes with this book is just a couple moves, not the full workout. The full workout is described with pictures in chapters 4 and 5. I suggest reading these chapters to learn proper form, but then exercising with a DVD.

I had no energy after my husband died. I stayed home and on the couch for two months. My blood pressure was high for the first time even though I only weigh 100 lbs. My doctor said it was stress brought on by his death and months of care giving after his tragic accident. Grief was literally killing me but I had no energy or motivation to exercise. T Tapp saved me. I knew I could do a three minute hoe down. I felt better. Then I did the 15 minute workout and noticed I didn't wake up depressed and was virtually free of back and neck pain. It's saved my life... given me back the will to live.

I bought the book and two DVDs (Instructional #1- Basic Workout Plus and Total Workout) five years ago... I read the book, was inspired by the real, heartfelt, and detailed testimonials, watched the DVDs, and tried the program. I lasted maybe a month doing the 15-minute workout and then I moved on. I never even got familiar with the 45-minute workout. I was interested in tightening up and losing a little weight, but I don't think I "got it" then. I tucked the whole thing on a shelf somewhere.Lately, I've been trying to tackle some health issues and was reading Mary Shomon's book, the latest publication of "The Thyroid Diet Revolution" and lo and behold, she started talking about Teresa Tapp and T-Tapping, saying she recommended the program as especially helpful to thyroid patients. So I dug out my old book and DVDs. As an amateur dancer (ballet, modern, jazz, "clogging") and naturally a small person, I am looking to tighten up more than lose a lot of inches (though the thighs and behind are my trouble areas). I realize that I'm lucky and don't have the hurdle that some do, but still, my body's far from perfect and I am trying not to fall completely apart as I age. I've watched too many around me just rust with age and I want to avoid any atrophy that I can by being proactive with my health.When I reached for the 15-minute workout DVD, I saw that it had a crack in it. I have no idea how that happened, but I figured I could always just do the first 15 minutes of the 45-minute workout and call it a day, since that is all the 15-minute workout is; just the beginning of the 45-minute one. But I ended up doing the whole 45 minutes and enjoying it. To be fair, I think you need both the book and the Instructional #1- Basic Workout Plus DVD in order to get the hang of these exercises. They're just different. I may be a dancer, which helps in picking up the form for the exercises, but I detest "exercise" and find that books never, ever explain moves as well as a written/visual combo does.Anyway, don't be fooled by the low-impact talk. I work up a considerable sweat doing this workout. When she says, "Feel the heat?" I respond- every time- "Yes, I do!" It's a good workout and I want to point out that I feel energized by it and not drained. I love that it stretches me out in ways that I didn't even know I was so tight... The first two weeks of doing the workout, I would groan every time she said, "Okay, now let's do a runner's stretch!" It's not even that long or hard, but something about her method was so hard for me. And here I thought that would be the easiest thing. In fact, all of the exercises seem so simple and easy that you don't even know you're working hard.Because I dance, I am very, very pleased with how much looser my hamstrings and my lower back are since I've been doing the 45-minute workout. It must be the way this program warms up the whole body, because I've never before been able to get those two areas to have lasting results from my stretching, but now they feel far better. They were both such tight areas for me and after less than a month, they feel great and relaxed. My arms are more toned, my waist is tighter, and my legs look more sculpted than a month ago. All this in just a month of a simple, not- exhausting program. I feel great, I don't dread exercising, and I've lost some inches, just as promised. Like I said, I'm small, but small doesn't mean tight, so I'm working to tighten my trouble areas and haven't bothered to weigh myself. I just like the way I look and feel.Awesome workout. Take your first couple of days to read about it and watch the Instructional #1- Basic Workout Plus DVD. I wouldn't say this is basic calisthenics and I find the main website confusing, but whatever. It's working.Just get started. I'm really pleased because I can see and feel the results and after every workout, I feel even better. Unfortunately, I bought the book before spending the money on the DVDs. I like the DVDs and find they are easier to follow than trying to do these exercises from the book. Good information, but if you plan to exercise, I say, spend the money on the DVD's and skip this book.
