Provides a brief rendition of the birth of Christ with great illustrations. Would have been nicer as a board book, since these pages are rather thin. I don't see it lasting very long if our toddler gets her hands on it.

I wanted to find a book that I could read to my daughter and the second grade class I teach at a Lutheran school that would cover the real Christmas story in a way that was understandable for kids and conveyed the message clearly. This book covers who Mary and Joseph were, how the angel came to Mary before Jesus' conception, how they traveled and finally found a place to rest in the hay, and how the three wise men came to see Him. It covers all the basic parts of the Christmas story and the kids enjoyed reading it.The book itself is very well made as all Little Golden books are and though the illustrations are colorful and detailed, they look very old and could use a more modern update. But this book does an excellent job of retelling the real meaning of Christmas.

I was disappointed in this book and I"m disappointed in the reviews that say this book is biblically true. The whole point of sharing the Christmas Story with children is so that they know Jesus' birth was a miracle. The book states that Joseph and Mary are married, which was really disturbing to me as they were not married and she became pregnant, which was the miracle. Joseph was simply selected by God to assist her on her journey.

I just ran across my kids copy of this very same book last week. The price on the cover was 39cents. My kids are now 47 and 44. I read it to their kids and now I have two great grandchildren to read it to, both on my Kindle and the actual Golden book. This story of the birth of our savior Jesus over two thousand years ago is still as precious as ever. The illustrations are so beautiful and the children are portrayed so sweetly. Golden Books were always a preferred choice of my kids years ago . They were always treasured. Thank you for making this story available to Kindle users .

The story is not written in a way a child can understand. There are at least two different places where there are typos. The story isn't entirely biblical. I don't recommend this book.

Story of Jesus' birth for young children beautifully illustrated by my favorite children's book illustrator Eloise Wilkins. I so much prefer these beautiful life-like pictures than the cartoonish characters that are found in most recent Christian literature written for children. This is a vintage but still very relevant book. So glad it is still in print after more than 60 years.

This receives 5 stars because it teaches children about the true meaning of Christmas and since I remembered it from my own childhood (many many years ago) then it absolutely deserved this rating.If I was to rate the “quality” of the book itself, no it’s not the greatest, but you get what you pay for. So, all factors considered this is a great purchase.

This is a good book for teaching the Christian/Catholic meaning of Christmas but the book is over 50 years old so the wording is dated. It might be a little harder to read if English is not your first language, but not impossible. It could be very beneficial to your children to read a book like this because it opens up their reading vocabulary. Many kids books today are lacking good writing and different writing styles, making reading the classics later on in life much harder. Give your kids a head start and buy books from all periods of time in American literature like this one!

We bought The Christmas Story as a gift for our son. We wanted to use the book to share the birth of Jesus around the holidays. It is very child friendly, and the artwork was wonderful. It will become a tradition for us to read this every year during the Christmas season.If you are buying this book to give to beginner readers, it uses vocabulary such as jostling, weary, kinsmen, wicked, and departed. Easy words for adults, but more difficult for children to decode and comprehend the story. I also felt as if some of the sentence structures were a bit awkward. Overall, it is a great way to introduce the true Christmas story to your family.

About the Author

Laural A. Bidwell grew up in Connecticut but left the rolling hills of the East years ago for the wide-open spaces of the American West. I have many Moon guides as an enthusiastic traveler and travel writer myself who writes for European audiences. The writer brings this to life with a great deal of first-hand research, the real magic is in her dedication to the owners of small town lodging and restaurant establishments, where she often incorporates their personalities and background into the narrative, making it all the ore compelling to stop and visit. The Hot Springs, Keystone, Hill City and Custer sections are especially well done and detailed and point out shops, galleries and family establishments that are otherwise almost always overlooked. Her writing is excellent and lively, extremely unpretentious and let's the reader decide for themselves with excellent facts and tidbits. The best Moon Guide I have ever come across, the author truly understands this beautiful place and has spent countless hours and hours researching and improving to try and provide us with a wonderful treasure map to the wonderful sites to offer in The area.

A chance comment by the grandson led us to start planning a week long trip with he and his sister to Mt. Rushmore, the Black Hills and the Badlands. I got every tour guide for the area the library had and it took only a few hours to browse them and decide to order this one from Amazon. It was all we needed. Every major attraction and many, many side trips and diversions are described in down-to-Earth language, without hype or local boosterism. It might be argued that the book needs more photos, more this, more that - all of which would make it just another mediocre, all-in-one guide This felt to me like having an experienced, local tour guide. With the aid of this book, we had a great time and saw a lot of things, a few of which we might have missed were it not for this guide. Excellent investment.Jerry

I found this book easy to read, easy to find what I wanted to find, and really helpful on my recent trip to the Black Hills. Without it I likely wouldn't have discovered some of the things we really enjoyed doing. I like that it wasn't cluttered up with lots of restaurant and hotel listings.

I really enjoyed reading this guide. It gave me detailed information on the Black Hills and Badlands areas, including things I hadn't considered, such as the narrow roads and tunnels (we travel in an RV) and the temperature difference between the Badlands and the higher altitude Black Hills. It pointed out attractions I didn't know about (the two main dinosaur attractions really sound interesting) and helped me narrow down what I wanted to do and see in the four days I'll have in the area.

We used this on our recent vacation to South Dakota. It is accurate, concise without leaving anything out, and has lots of info on lesser known places. We used it every day, multiple times per day. As an avid hiker and backpacker, I loved the sections on outdoor activities. It was because of this book that I chose to backpack in Wind Cave National Park. It also has sections for families with children. We liked it so well that we're going to order the Arizona guide to use on our trip to the Grand Canyon next year.

We ordered this for our trip to the Badlands in South Dakota. This book was full of tips and information which we followed. By using this book we were able to get off the beaten path a bit and saw the most amazing things we would have missed otherwise. It's small and fits right in your suit case.

There were not a lot of options in travel books for this region. This book has plenty of information about each area with sample itineraries and good maps. I like that it divides the area in sections which I think makes it easier to plan what you'd like to see.

At first I didn't think I would like this book because there were not a lot of pictures in it. I like to see what is there like DK or National Geographic guidebooks usually do. I couldn't find any of my favorite guidebooks on Mount Rushmore so I took a chance on this one and was amazed. The information contained in this book is fabulous. I especially liked the recommendations made for scenic drives, accommodations, and restaurants. The detail of what to see and what to expect was excellent. Following up with searches on Trip Advisor to see personal experiences with hotels and places to see have made me more confident that I have researched the area well enough to have a pleasant trip this summer. I have also discovered that not all MOON Handbooks are created equal as each has a different author. This one, however, I found exceptional. I get a lot of peace reading this book. It starts exactly where one is. It employs a super-simple method of ending each day: what were you most pleased with; and what were you least pleased with in your day? There is a minimum of technical terms thrown in: the plus-factors are called "consolation" and the negatives are "desolation". The book goes on to develop deeper levels of looking at one's own life, and choosing best paths that will lead to the greatest sense of fulfillment. Another thing I like is that it is a suitable method for any age, families, adult sharing groups and so on. Contains lots of examples from the authors.

This little book is changing my life! I am developing so much gratitude through this simple and quick habit of looking for God in the events of the day in review. Highly recommend. Don't let the childish illustrations fool you as they almost did for me.

I was introduced to this little book by the facilitator who led a practicum I attended at the seminary where I am a student. The process of the daily examen as it is explained and expressed in this gentle volume makes Ignatius' practice clear and accessible to anyone who wants to establish this practice of reflection and prayer as part of daily living.It looks like a children's book. It is not. The authors tell the story of children orphaned by the bombing raids of WWII. The ones who were fortunate enough to land in refugee camps had lost so much, and had experienced starvation. They were so fearful that they couldn't sleep. Someone had the idea of sending each child to bed with a piece of bread to hold. Bread, real food to hold. And they could finally sleep because they knew that they would wake up and have something to eat in the morning.And this is what this book can become. Food for the soul held in our hands as we review the day before we sleep. Food that can sustain us. Food that we can literally hold in our hands before we sleep, and have by our bedsides when we wake, so that we can be always certain that we will be fed, body and soul, by the sustaining grace of this practice of prayer.This book will certainly be of value for adult seekers. It will also be a way to introduce teens to a powerful spiritual practice, and, approached sensitively, can even be a way to introduce younger children to the practice of looking for unkind acts and loving acts during the course of their days, learning gratitude and forgiveness.Truly bread for the journey, doled out in small bites that we can hold in our hands when we sleep so that we can awaken with the assurance that we always have food to sustain. I love the content of this book. I have it in regular printed format. I thought having it on my kindle would be more portable and makeit easier for me to use throughout the day as I find the examen process a good way to find balance in my daily life and daily interactions with people. Unfortunately I'm finding that the kindle version often suddenly closes when I get to specific pages. I've tried re-syncing. Opening and closing the book. Re-downloading from Cloud and the same "closing problem" occurs. I've tried to look for troubleshooting tips on Amazon and haven't found an answer to the question and yes I do have automatic updates turned on. So - books content gets a 5 star rating but the kindle version needs some work as this is the only kindle book I've purchased/downloaded in a year with this problem.

Amazon seems to be lumping all different editions together in the reviews so it is impossible to know which edition you are reading about. Had it been clear that THIS printing was awful, i would not have purchased it. This has a brown cover with a picture of London on it. It was about $3. I received it today, and it is obviously a cheap home print job--thin, barely laminated cover, weird size (about 6x8"), very thin (entire book crammed into 45 pages). I bought it for first of three kids to read for school; this is not something I want to keep on my bookshelves for a while. It's a classic; I want a halfway decent copy. Child will continue to read it on free Kindle edition for now, and I'm ordering a new copy from a "known" publisher. Don't buy this one--

Beware...bought this because my 6th grader has to read it for school, thought he would enjoy an illustrated version. The issues...this book looks home made and for some strange reason the illustrations are all photos of artwork of naked ladies...not pictures from the story about DOGS!!!! The font for the story is literally all different sizes and and the layout is crazy. Really really surprised and disappointed!

(Warning:If you have a pet or if you are an animal lover it might prove extremely challenging to sail through many parts of the book). Just when Buck finally finds a master who he dearly loves and is loved, he hears a call, the 'call of the wild'. He knows that he cannot ignore the call.This is a slim volume, can perhaps be read in one sitting if you have some time. I had not imagined that such a book would keep me riveted, for it is not about mystery,suspense, adventure or action. It is about a dog! No wonder this is a classic.(if you plan to read the book, feel free to skip the rest of this below)The Alaska Gold Rush of late 19th century (1896 or so) attracted something like 100,000 prospectors, mostly from the San Francisco/Seattle areas to the Yukon region.Well cared, healthy, powerful dogs attracted unheard of premiums. This prompted a greedy gardener to kidnap his employer's dog and sell it off to work the sleds. While being transported from sunny Santa Clara Valley, Buck changes many cruel hands, however his last tormentor is particularly vile. He clubs Buck to pulp leaving him clinging to life. The experience infuses a steely character in Buck. While anything could break his body, nothing could break his spirit.Buck has to fight many competitors to finally establish supremacy of the pack.His masters recognize his remarkable character and reward him by according him the pride of place, to lead the pack. Demands of transportation make the dogs overworked, underfed and exploited, Buck included. He, like the rest of his pack is reduced to skin and bone. He is sold to ignorant but cruel masters who continue the exploitation, but Buck would have none of it. His greatness is recognized by a camper who adopts him and then begins Buck's wonderful life. He regains everything he had lost and seems even more virile and strong than the best of past times. Buck serves his master, even helping him add to his fortunes. When everything seems hunky dory, something tells Buck his place is in the wild. When the call of the wild is received it does not go unheeded.Meanwhile his master and associates are killed by native Indians.Trust Buck to take revenge and kill them all, establishing his superiority over even man himself. After this inflection point and after having lost his beloved master, Buck is even more convinced that his place is in the Wild and he returns to it, as if he had belonged there all the time.

this book is a little one dimentional and needs some work. but its a good addition and start point for anyone who wants to "flesh out" the clans for a RPG

good product but is for 3rd edition. Still has alot of good information that can be used.

This field manual is much like the Comstar one. It tries to cover too many different nations, and as a consequence, feels lacking after you are finished reading it. On the other hand, it provides decent updates of every major periphery nation and excellent information on their armed forces. Also, the manual is written from the point of view of the Word of Blake overall, but incudes sections by the periphery powers themselves, creating an interesting set of viewpoints to compare in the book. As far as new 'mechs and equipment go, the manual has logical developements, but that still didn't hide my disappointment that nothing cooler was coming out of the periphery (I always like to root for the underdogs, especially the Outworlds Alliance). Overall, though, I think that this is a solid book, with regard to its information on periphery leaders and personages, and on periphery militaries (including pirates!). Also, for any Mechwarrior players, the manual excels here, providing over ten life paths with their own individual event tables. The only thing I noticed with that was that many of the next path options list a path called Tour of Duty: Periphery, but the manual (disappointingly) has no such path, so I don't know what to make of that. Like all the other FASA manuals that I've seen so far, this one is well written and layed out, but it falls below the excellence of the Lyran and FedSuns manuals, being more like the Comstar book.

The descriptive accounts for gamers and battletech universe readers of Clan life, history and most interesting of all characteristics bring to life the Clan way.The background information is formidable.A few of the early clans that were absorbed or lost are missing but overall an excellent read to pick up time after time.

Glad for reviews that pointed out this is the book for those individuals who are getting their first iPhone. My husband was transitioning from a flip phone to iPhone 8 plus. Mine is a 6 so his will do things mine won't do. Especially with the photographs. I have learned somethings about my phone from looking at this book I didn't know. Pictures are very explanatory. Husband has quit asking me daily questions. I see him looking at this book. It is very basic. Very. Lots of pictures and the pictures show exactly where to look and what to do. I will definitely recommend it to my non technically gifted friends who call me at all hours of day and night with cell phone questions.

This book has it all for the iPhone novice, which is what I am. Whether you need answers to basic questions or detailed, this book will help. I would suggest, however, that readers simply use the phone as they might normally use it, but, using this book, gradually explore features as they need them. The book is probably thus used as a reference over a longer period of time. Over time, many features of the phone may never be used by many people, but just knowing what capabilities are available gives us confidence that if we do want to delve into them, this book will show us how to do that.

This is a very basic book which is exactly what this non-techy senior citizen needed to understand my iPhone.

For the most part the book is clear and the steps one needs to take are well photographed. Today I decided to learn how to make videos to which the book only dedicates two pages. I was able to figure out the video part and then wondered if it would automatically record the sound. The answer is no. I looked at numerous topics in the table of contents and could find nothing about adding audio to a video. By using other resources on the internet I figured out that one has to go into settings and muck around with the control center. The book has no information about this and I am concerned that the writers could leave out such a basic and important topic. I looked at some videos and tutorials and finally figured out how to activate the sound but it took me almost an hour.

Sometimes I review products just for me and my tastes and other times I review them because I know and understand the audience that would love them. I'm reviewing this book a bit from my Dad's point of view because he would absolutely love it.We've all got a parent or grandparent that isn't great with tech. They like to hold onto the tech they know and need someone to walk them through new technology when they do get around to upgrading. That walk through is usually in the form of step by step instructions (push this, then type that, then push this...etc) and that is what this book excels. This book is going to be perfect for someone that wants to learn to use their iPhone 5 or older device with iOS 6 by being told exactly what to do and being shown exactly where each button that needs to be pressed is. In short its the book I'd leave my Dad if I had to leave him alone with his new phone and didn't want him to give up and use it as a paper weight.Following many set of instructions is a "tip" which is an extra fact or answer to a question you may have had about the set of instructions you just went over. I found some of the tips helpful and I actually liked some of the more condensed tip instructions better than the step by step instructions.I've looked at several iPhone 5 manuals/guides. Most have beautiful color pictures and are generally well written. This one is no exception. Its a well designed book that walks the user through all of the major and most minor functions of their phone. It doesn't give much extra information that isn't required for use(for instance iPhone: The Missing Manual has greater depth about the phones innards), but I think this is by design because the target audience for this book may not care so much about why things work, just how to use them.I could see someone reading this book cover to cover, but I think it is more likely to be used as a reference book as the step by step instructions strike me as more text book than read for pleasure. If this is how you plan to use the book you should be well set up. The index is fairly comprehensive and between it and the table of contents I was almost always able to quickly identify the section I was looking for.Final thoughts.I'm not saying that this is a book only for the tech challenged. I think its also probably one of the better reference style iPhone 5 books out there, getting most beginners up to speed quickly and providing a greater depth of skills to experienced users. For that it gets 4 stars.But for someone who wants to know everything about their phone and can get by without a step by step visual walk through there are more complete books in a more readable style.*******UPDATE: COMPARATIVE RANKINGSI never intended to read enough iPhone 5 "manuals" to truly compare them. First I just like learning about the phone. Then I got interested in the differences in teaching styles and ended up reading 5 really well put together books. I ended up rating them all relatively highly simply because they were all great books that will serve their target audiences very well. But since they're all great books you deciding on star ranking alone may not get you the right book so I'm adding a comparative ranking to each of my reviews to help you identify which target audience you might be in.I still stand by my initial reviews, but with more background my perspective has definitely grown.Overall Comprehensiveness:1) The Missing Manual (iPhone: The Missing Manual) - Covers from the tech in the phone to multiple ways to do almost everything2) My iPhone (My iPhone (Covers iPhone 4, 4S and 5 running iOS 6) (6th Edition)) - Maybe a touch less tech coverage than The Missing Manual, but not by much3) iPhone 5 for Dummies (iPhone 5 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)))- A reasonably comprehensive guide that doesn't bog down in tech detail and covers fewer ways to do things than the missing manual4) Teach Yourself Visually (Teach Yourself VISUALLY iPhone 5 (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech))) - just a how-to usually one method per function5*) iPhone 5 for Dummies for Seniors (iPhone 5 For Seniors For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))) - A moderately distilled version of the dummies book with more focus on "senior specific" topics(*I thought this should be singled out for its special topics of interest which my override total comprehensiveness for some buyers)Readability and Narrative:1) The Missing Manual - Reads well and the author has a bit of a sense of humor. The lack of walk throughs actually tends to make reading flow more naturally2) My iPhone - The narrative in this book made it accessible and helped disperse any nervousness you might have about learning a new tech device2) iPhone 5 for Dummies - A readable book, but certainly not my favorite read and probably not something I'd read for fun (even if I am a bit of a tech geek)4) iPhone 5 for Dummies for Seniors - Big text make this book "readable," but I wasn't engaged with the narrative5) Teach Yourself Visually - This book is walk throughs its not for light readingWalk throughs and step-by-step instructions:1) Teach Yourself Visually - Tons of brilliantly detailed instructions with pictures that point out exactly where to press2) My iPhone - Nice guides offset from the narrative in distinctive blue boxes with helpful pictures.3) iPhone 5 for Dummies for Seniors - More guided instructions than the regular Dummies iPhone book, but not close to the Teach Yourself Visually book that I would recommend to my parents in terms of quantity or quality4) iPhone 5 for Dummies5) The Missing Manual - Step by step, button-by-button guides are not emphasized. The book isn't void of all instructions, but they are imbedded in text and assume that you read the first chapters and can find the appropriate buttons.

My phone ringer was off for 2 days. When I discovered this, neither I nor my 2 teenage children (who are fairly tech-savvy) could figure out how to turn it back on. The phone itself offered no answers. As soon as we arrived home, I grabbed this clear, well-indexed book and immediately found that there was a hidden switch on the side of the phone (that I had inadvertently switched off when I searched for the charger input days earlier). The iphone 5 is my first smart phone. Using it is not intuitive to me. This book made the phone so easy to navigate. Buy this book as soon as you buy your iphone 5!

This book is for the true novice with an iPhone. It starts right where a new owner (who has never used an iPhone before) needs to start. I turned in my Droid for iPhone 5, and this book has helped me tremendously. Who knew that you start by plugging the phone into your computer before you start? Well, I didn't know. Probably most others know this, but I am not that tech-savy. So this book is for me! If you are new to an iPhone and not tech-savy, this book is for you. (I only gave it 4 stars because it has soooo much information that I feel that I need to read first, and I don't have the time to read everything -- cover-to-cover.) The organizational content of the book is such that it starts at the beginning of anything you want to learn (how-to get started all the way to becoming an expert). For me, I would have preferred a short summary of just the beginning stuff I need to know; then let me read the details later -- after I have played with the phone some more. Maybe your methodology for learning is different. But definitely a great book for a beginner.

Excellent reference; super pictures and diagrams to follow. For a first time user ofan iPhone it was the best.
