This book is going to help so many girls and young women ...I'd even say of all ages! I only wish I had this book and its tools at a much younger age. The tools and examples the author walks you through are invaluable, breaking down causes of and ways to identify responses to anxiety and stress. She then takes the reader through ways to manage these responses and wraps up with how to shift thoughts, outlooks, and even breathing and mindfulness practices. All tools I just started learning, but would've been incredibly useful to have used in my earlier years to build upon as life got more complicated! I also love how the book is designed to be more like an interactive workbook to work through each area being taught. I highly recommend this for any girls or young women in your life (or even moms of young girls!) who may be just starting to encounter experiences with anxiety or stress or have been and could use some tools to help work through those feelings to then thrive and rise above them!
This book is so well written and so perfectly describes different types of stress and anxiety. It's helped me identify my types of symptoms and how to handle them. I loved all the included worksheets!.... Oceanna, age 13
A fully thought out book for getting to the core of the girl. Beautiful cover and every page exemplify the knowledge of the author. Deep activities to be completed over time; this book will be remembered by any girl who works through it.The only con is one that is a catch 22:It a bit wordy. Being a book to help young girls/women learn about themselves, stress and anxiety, you have to dig into the root and understanding of the matters. That require teaching and lots of words. However, if you hand this book to a young lady who might still be lethargic or melancholy due to stressors or anxiety she may not be very excited about all the reading that proceeds the activity. That being said this book may not be for every young woman and completing it should guarantee a reward or incentive.This is a catch-22 because too often books like this only deal with the surface issue and therefore ineffective. But if at glance a book does not look interesting or looks like too much work, it can turn off even the very person it was designed to help. I think this book might be affected by that.I don't doubt this book will be helpful to young girls of varying cultures but they have to get pulled in early in order to even want to continue and the opening isn't an exciting read to guarantee that.I rec this book but maybe get two and work through the book with the young person you are giving it too.
This is the book I WISH I had in high school! When I was in high school I had anxiety and depression that led to deeper issues as a young adult because I didn’t learn how to deal with it until it had already caused significant harm on my life. If I had had such a loving, clearly articulated and helpful book as this one, I have a feeling I would have avoided a lot of the challenges I faced. Christine does such a fabulous job of weaving in stories from other youth with important lessons about stress and anxiety while also tying in helpful exercises to make this a hands on experience. Young girls will know they are NOT ALONE in what they are experiencing and they’ll learn ways to just let it go!I am sooo excited this book is out in the world and know it is going to help so many young women out there!
Letting Go has been a saving grace for not only me and my family due to my own experience with stress and anxiety, but for many of the student's I work with. As a School Psychologist who works primarily with student's with Social, Emotional AND Academic deficits, I have seen a significant increase in absenteeism among young females and many of their absences are attributed to the stress they experience as they attempt to navigate not only their academic world but their social-emotional world as well. I am so thrilled that Christine has written this book to help address this specific population of young people. I have shared this resource with several student's and I have also used some of the activities for my own personal use. The book is user friendly, yet presented in a way that ensures the reader's that the information presented is based on research and evidence based practices. I highly recommend this book without any hesitation to ALL youth girl's, whether or not they have or suspect they have anxiety. We live in a stressful world and the book helps to not only normalize the stress we feel, but also helps us to realize that stress is not always a bad thing. The main take away that I have experienced from this book is not that stress/anxiety is the enemy, but rather a manifestation of the way we think about the situations we are experiencing. I LOVE the exercises and I can say that I will continue to reference this book in the future for not only my student's but for myself and my growing daughters' as well.
Christine Fonseca has again delivered an informative text on a topic which will help many. Being familiar with her previous work, including Emotional Intensity in Gifted Students, I was eager to read Letting Go. I was especially pleased with the approach Fonseca uses in Letting Go. Instead of using a novel format which can be passively read, Letting Go uses a workbook approach which allows you to dig in and do the work to reframe the role stress and anxiety plays in your life. Skillfully written for a young adult audience, this is a guide that can support girls of any age who are experiencing stress. I received an ARC of this book, and am happy to submit my fair and honest review.
This book is a MUST HAVE! After failed methods I finally found an effective way to support my daughter. My child always felt that stress was bad but after reading this she realized "stress is not the enemy." This book is a great resource with activities to support evidence based cognitive strategies. It's very practical. The author did a fabulous job in tying the different areas with activities. This book is insightful and highly practical. I cannot recommend it enough! It is an excellent read and provides journal writing to increase understanding.Liz Gonzalez
