While enrolled in a college course in "nuclear chemistry" I used the 1982 hardcover edition of this book that was published by Halsted Press, a division of John Wiley & Sons of New York. While an unexpected but positive financial opportunity caused me to cancel my semester of study midway through, I read and worked with Dr. Arnikar's book long enough to appreciate it.Dr. Hari Jeevan Arnikar is Professor Emeritus in Chemistry at the University of Poona and has had wide research experience. After receiving his Ph.D. from the Banaras Hindu University, he worked in the laboratories of the College de France, in Paris and obtained his Dr.es-Sc. Later, he worked as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Arnikar has also been a consultant to UNESCO in the Pilot Project for the Teaching of Chemistry in S.E. Asia, Bangkok.As the Amazon.com description above mentions, this book presents theories of nuclear structure and stability, types of radioactivity and nuclear reactions, including fission and fusion, principles of nuclear reactor and elements of radiation chemistry. Also, typical applications of isotopes and nuclear radiation in research, medicine, and industry are described often with examples drawn from the author's work.One of the things I liked about this book was that physical concepts, often left out in books for chemists (and students), are presented here clearly in small steps to help in the understanding of the material in question. I found this to be a very positive element in favor of the book and the author's approach. In addition, I found that numerous examples were worked out with the same objective. This makes for a book that one may go to easily at some future point for review and, therefore, belongs on the shelf of concerned students and professionals alike.It is worth noting too, that SI units are used in general in this book along with some notes explaining these units (and their cgs equivalents). Selected problems with answers are found at the end of each chapter.I believe this book was originally intended to meet the needs of advanced undergraduates and beginning Graduate students of both Indian and American universities offering nuclear and radiation chemistry. It also, in my view, serves as an introduction to more advanced books on the subject of nuclear chemistry. (Chapterwise references and a fairly comprehensive bibliography are provided as a guide for further study too.)Having said all this, the book is not without its present day shortcomings. First, it was written and published almost thirty years ago so it cannot speak to recent developments and advances in the field of nuclear chemistry. (Still, chapter 6 on nuclear fission and chapter 7 on nuclear reactors hold up well in my view and are nicely presented.) Another slight problem some may have with this book is that while it is written clearly, it is written for an academic audience. Mature thinking students and other similiar individuals should not have a problem with this but it is not a book for the general reader.I recommend this book be in the library of students, teachers, and those whose occupation involves the physical sciences and engineering -- especially with nuclear overtones. I found it to be a very useful book to turn to when one desires a straightforward explanation on some question or topic involving nuclear chemistry. I cannot say if Dr. Arnikar is still with us, but he deserves credit for writing a useful text on the subject that is accessible to many readers.

I'm an elementary school ESOL teacher. My own 4th grade child has moderate auditory processing and working memory challenges.Right now, I'm using this book at home to help my 4th grader. Last spring the math specialist was trying to drill her on the multiplication tables by rote memory -- and it just wasn't happening. In fact, she ended up with a huge case of failure-induced math anxiety. My concern was that I wanted her to have a stronger conceptual understanding of multiplication, not just to spit out memorized math facts. ...so I bought this book for use at home.In the past 3 weeks (just prior to and at the beginning of the school year), we've been working through the first set of conversations, drawing activities, and games in this book. Yesterday, as we were talking about the game (from the book) we've been playing, I commented to my child, "See, math isn't so bad." (She had been so anxious about going back to school this year and taking math.) She responded, "Mom, that game isn't math. It's fun!" Hmmmmmmm.....:)The fewer, deeper visually-oriented activities -- such as the pattern coloring and analyses activity (which we also invited her 7th grade sister to do as part of the fun) -- has prepared my 4th grader well. It's amazing to see. She's more fluent in identifying composite and prime numbers and their factors. She's been zipping through her multiplication homework each night so we get to the games from this book. When she gets stuck, I've been having her use some of the visual strategies emphasized in the book along with the other items in her growing strategy toolkit.More activities in an education book can be overwhelming and sometimes, not as useful. Fewer, deeper games around Big Ideas can have a positive effect on conceptual understanding. This book has a great set of deep, visually-engaging approaches to mathematical understanding. I'm looking forward to the Grade 7 book and plan on buying it to use with my older child. One suggestion: Consider some kind of grouping discount (for purchases of multiple books in this set) for those of us who'd like to buy these books for home use each year.In terms of my ESOL teacher job: My focus is on teaching my students at school how to use language to learn content. I can see great promise for this book with my multilingual learners as well

This book is amazing for non-mathematical parents like myself. I think I have learned as much as my child. Having spent 41 years as a communication and language arts teacher, math was a subject I avoided. My 9 year old really enjoys the perceptual and visual challenges this program provides. I do wish it offered an answer guide for parents and perhaps DVD's of its core concepts. I know the answers are to be discovered by the students however, if there is a struggle it can be hard to help walk them through it. However, it has caused me to work through the problems myself using Google and YouTube, so in the end it has still been helpful.

While she debunks a few hair care myths, Ms Begoun glosses over other prevalent false beliefs and I cannot recommend the book overall. An appropriate hair care book would only fill a small pamphlet, imparting very basic scientific info. Hair is dead, and you cannot improve it by washing it . Nor will applying vitamins, proteins or any other exotic ingredient improve it. That being said, some products make it even worse. You may improve the cosmetic appearance of your corpse a tad, however that is highly subjective. Compare the cheapest products, which usually have similar ingredients, with the most expensive. Trial and error. And less is usually more!!

First, to those who whine about it being outdated- hello, have you ever seen how often companies change product names? Did you expect some Harry Potter-esque book that could update itself?THIS BOOK IS GREAT because it teaches you a few key things- 1) beauty companies can and do lie, so the product that promises thicker hair doesn't even legally have to deliver. 2) hair cannot be repaired- it's not a broken arm that can grow back stronger but it can look better and stop being damaged and 3) she explains what shampoos, etc are made of and covers different companies and product types in depth.This book helped me stop spending $20 a bottle on shampoo and getting the same great healthy hair for $3 a bottle. It taught me what brands are full of more irritating ingredients that may increase dander and such, and so much more. It's a cheap book, Paula has a website if you really need someone to tell you the exact name of every product you try, but if you care about your hair and how it looks get this book and ignore the people who can't figure out that Sam's Softening Shampoo got renamed to Sam's Moisturizing Shampoo.You'll learn enough in the first couple chapters to know what ingredients you do and don't want in your shampoo whether it's from the salon or the dollar store.

As a person who went to cosmetology school hair products and selling them boost your pay when you are a stylist the products that you use on a client and sell help you make money. Salon products are a very costly experience if you do not know what you are getting or know about your hair type and what the products do. Paula takes the products and explains them and their ingredients and helps you understand what's in them and what they do but more importantly she allows you to learn so you can make better choices for your money.

Another hit from Paula! I was very interested in getting a hair book by her as all of her skin books changed my life. She explains in detail how some of the ingredients in every day shampoos, conditioners and styling products alike can cause scalp and/or hair damage and irritation. Then of course, her reviews of each hair care line are always outstanding!

Over the years I have purchased several of these books as the price of the book can save you much money in terms of misguided cosemetic purchases. This book, is better than her cosmetics books because she actually packs a lot of other info in the book. There are an ample number of product reviews but she adds in more about the chemistry of what goes into most hair care products.I like this book the most because she also covers coloring of hair, a variety of other treatments, styling aides, and where your money will get the best bang for the buck. For example, did you know that letting your hair air dry is the best of all for your hair, as it causes no damange?I like that she covers that there aren't often major differences in drugstore shampoos and what you buy at the salons.This book is packed with information, information that will help you make better choices. I can honestly say I have saved money since the purchase of this book and rethought a couple of items in the realm of hair care that will also help me save money, and not see a bit of a difference in the health of my hair. While the book may be a little bit out of date in 2008 it is still worthwhile in picking up.

Very informative, though there are definitely hair care brands that she doesn't review (like KeraCare, for example). However, there are numerous brands that I have never heard of that are included, and some of which seem like they weren't popular since the 1980's. . . . . .I did like the book enough though to give it as a gift to my friend who has lots of trouble finding hair care products that don't irritate her scalp. The author does a decent job of explaining the ingredients (both necessary ones and ones that are merely for show) that are included in shampoos, conditioners, and some styling products. She tells which ones have been shown to cause irritation for alot of people. So, I'm hoping this will help my friend. For my own personal use, I like understanding some of the science behind the ingredients, and which ones really don't make any difference to hair health. There are even some styling tips included and a chapter on African-American hair.
