This book is truly incredible. After a lot of years of making large amounts of bread by hand, I had stopped making bread for a few years because I didn't eat that much myself. Recently I have decided to get back into making my own bread and am very happy. I used to make six loaves at a time but decided to just make two at a time and bake them in my Oster toaster oven. I also bought an excellent Sunbeam bread machine and, for convenience sake, am using that to take the bread through the first rising. I ordered this book thinking I might copy two or three recipes and then pass the book on to my daughter. When I started looking through the book I was amazed. I immediately ordered a second copy of this book for my daughter. There are huge numbers of wonderful bread recipes I would have never thought of in there. There are also some jam recipes and some instructions for making some of the toppings you might want to use on fancy breads. I plan on making some of these unusual and incredible breads for family occasions in the future so I had to hold on to this book. Anyone who either has a bread machine, makes their own bread without a machine, or is thinking of getting into bread making should grab a copy of this book right away. You will be forever grateful for this book.

I got this recipe book because I wanted to try some smaller loaves than the one in The Bread Lover's Bread Machine handbook and per reviews this one scales all the recipes for you to different loaf sizes so I wouldn't have to worry about those odd recipes where you halve everything except the one crucial ingredient that has to stay the same or be reduced at a different rate than everything else.The first recipe I tried in the book (The second recipe listed: Blue ribbon bread machine bread) at 1-lb size and saw that there was 1.5t of salt in there, I followed the instructions and got a salty, salty loaf. Went back and checked the recipe and saw that the salt had been scaled back proportionately in all of the other sizes, but the 1-lb loaf had the same amount of salt as the 1.5 lb loaf. Definitely a typo.So while this cookbook does the proportions for different loaf sizes it DOES NOT get them right.

I have a large collection of bread machine cookbooks, many of which I no longer use, so I'm not one to run out and buy any new one that comes along. But this one caught my eye; I hoped it would have some unusual bread recipes. I've yet to be disappointed.The variety of recipes is extensive. Every one I have tried has turned out perfectly, from fairly basic recipes (Whole Wheat Cheddar Cheese, Anadama, and various ryes) to the more unusual (Chocolate Glazed Banana Coconut Swirl Loaf was delicious). Most of the recipes provide the measurements for various size loaves, from 1 to 3 pounds, which is helpful. Many, especially those using whole wheat, call for "Artisan Dough Enhancer." Ms. Fertig provides a recipe for making your own if you wish. I did that and have used it, but I honestly can't say if it's made much difference in the loaves. However, I have noticed that all the loaves I've baked from this book have been more moist than recipes from other books (the book I favored and mainly used up until this purchase is The Bread Lover's Bread Machine Cookbook, and I still highly recommend it).UPDATE 8/30/12: One problem has come to my attention which isn't much of a problem if you're a seasoned bread maker, because you will catch it immediately. The problem is, the measurement amounts for yeast in the larger (2 & 3 lb) loaves are wrong. When I first started using the book I thought it was just a typo in one or two recipes but now I know that every recipe calls for exceedingly small amounts of yeast for large quantities of flour. The measurements are correct for the 1 and 1-1/2 pound breads, but if you are making the 2 or 3 pound loaves that call for 4 to 5+ cups of flour, you need to use more than 1-1/4 TEASPOONs of yeast! I do think this is a typographical error, but it is consistent throughout the book. {End of update.}The recipes includes tips on water temperature, variations on ingredients, as well as instructions for oven rather than machine baking. Buns & rolls, braids & brioches, and an assortment of dough recipes, every type of bread is represented here, along with a variety of fillings, glazes and even a few chutneys. Throughout the book are scattered a number of full color photographs, making the book a delight to browse.All in all, The Artisan Bread Machine recipe book is excellent, well worth the discounted price here on Amazon (or full price, for that matter). I'm happy I bought it.

The recipes look interesting, although I haven't tried any yet. The stars are based on layout and a quick read of the recipes. I like having the separate recipes for different loaf sizes. But, it was a very odd choice to include "metric" by converting imperial volume measures to metric volume measures. It's much more common to use a weight-based metric system. (Which would have solved the measuring issue the author raises in the introductory material.) I will just weigh as I go the first time I make each recipe and annotate the book.

My husband bought me a fancy bread machine and I wanted recipes that were tested by a professional and not recipes made up without real baking knowledge and posted online. This book is exactly what I was looking for. The layout is great; simple instructions broken down by size of loaf with hints and tips listed along the side. I have tried a few and each were fantastic. Each recipe came out exactly as described. If you have a bread machine buy this book!

I enjoyed the recipes for the breads which is maybe half the book. The breads come out pretty good and I especially appreciate that you get the same recipe but for different size loafs. You can't just halve a recipe when you see a recipe for a 2 lb loaf and want a 1 lb loaf so it's very helpful to have the 1, 1 1/2, and 2 lb versions. The second half of the book covering rolls, flatbreads and pizzas was not so great since these all require baking time in the oven. I use a bread machine specifically because I don't want to have to bake in the oven so these don't work for me. Had I known that I would have sought out a different book. But I did enjoy the bread section so not a bad purchase overall. Hope this review helps a little in making your decision.

Small book, absorbing content.Klein's use of movement and often very clever composition captivates. I have no clear favorites given the overall quality of his work but want to mention some highlights:No 3 "Gun 2" with a priceless expression, No 2 "St. Patrick's Day" with a staggered stern seriousness, No 9 "Candy Store" which is simply beautiful or beautifully simple, No 16 "Corner Cigar Store" with a good dozen stories in a single frame, No 2o "Watchman" with one of the most compelling compositions I ever saw, No 28 "Bikini" with life in 3 panels and multiple verticals, No 35 "Bodybuilder" where reality melts with its symbol, No 48 "Cafe terrace" where most of us would walk by but Klein captures life divided etc etc...I also like Klein's technique. As much as possible in focus, never care about blur, push the film as high as it needs to be, grain or no grain. Content is King.Otherwise, Thames & Hudson delivers an incredible quality product for a very low price. The choice of essays about Klein and his work instead of lengthy texts at the beginning is spot on.
