The quality of the book, the kind of questions, and the fact there is only one question per page and there is plenty of room for kids to write and make mistakes, is great. I know about math and the questions are designed very wise.The first one of these series that I ordered was for Grade 4 which it is called Level 3. After my child finished with Grade 4, I ordered books for Grade 5, 6, 7, and 8.I am not sure why on the cover of these books, in addition to "Grade number" there is a "Level number" too, the Level number is always one step lower than "Grade number" , but that is not important, I buy them according to their Grade numbers.

It is a great math book. It has interesting yet challenging problems, that helps my 11-year old think outside the box. He hates the book, because it presents problems in a different way than he's used to, therefore makes him think harder :) So the book was a great investment.

Our family uses Math U See curriculum but has enjoyed simultaneously using some daily math/daily word problem books from Evan-Moore publishers as a way to keep aligned with the common core standards in case our children go back to regular school. The Evan-Moore products only go through 6th grade so we purchased this for additional 7th grade work with the second half of Math U See Pre-Algebra. It is VERY challenging but with my husband's help, our kids can get it. We feel that it is a good exercise to do these a few times a week and that it is good for our children to come across a variety of math challenges. The answers show the work as it would be taught through the Singapore curriculum which is often very different than the traditional way we were taught. Consequently this opens up many interesting conversations!

I love the Singapore Must Know Word Problems Series. The problems in the Level 6 - Grade 7 are good for grades 7-9. I use this book with advanced students for enrichment. I have definitely seen a difference with how students approach word problems after going through this book.

After I purchased the book and review it, the first thing I did is I threw away all the answers, because I found the way of solution are not any helpful, it just make kids fell confuse.If you are good in math and can teach your kids by yourself, you can use the questions, if not, I am not recommend this book.

Look at the picture I have posted. Near the margin, some of the words are only partially appear, making this book hard to use with students. The last word on the first line should be total. This occurs on several pages.

This is a great resource for parents and teachers. The problems and the problem-solving methods help develop thinking skills, not just traditional algorithms. Adults who did not enjoy math in school, should try these to see that they truly can do math and think mathematically.

On only the second use, I was curious to see the exact definition of the word conflate. Entered it as search term, and "word not found." Tried browsing "C" and found the definitions jumped from "conflagration" to "conflict." Had to go home and look it up in my REAL dictionary. In my humble opinion, an incomplete product like this should be free. Woefully inadequate, can't wait to see what other common words are left out. Pain in the ass, really.

The other reviewers appear to address the printed version rather than the Kindle-specific version. I am focusing on the Kindle Application.Strengths -- easily used under Kindle platform, terse, usually is clear in distinguishing parts of speech, and it can be used as the default dictionary.Weaknesses1. Definitions are not necessarily any more complete than those from the New Oxford American Dictionary(already built-in on Kindle). Several that I used tonight were less so.2. Definitions for one part of speech are often dependent on another definition listed for another part of speech (a weakness of many dictionaries that is annoying for more complex or unfamiliar words)----Simple example: the word anger is both a noun and a verb, Thus they define the verb form as "to make angry".3. Thesaurus component is okay and gives additional ideas for the verb "anger". However antonyms are very limited if the purpose is to use this as a writing resource. Very few choices.----For example: antonyms for anger (verb) were delight, gratify and please. But other common options are missing such as calm, sooth, pacify. One would have to keep browsing and unless you set this as the default, you keep ending up in another dictionary when trying to do that.4. Word Origins are sometimes given, mostly abbreviated and with less detail than in Kindle's Default Dictionary.I have not compared word counts. Sheer mass of definitions is a misleading index of quality.

Let's face it, with today's self correcting word processors, the commonality of these dictionaries and thesaurus books have almost gone extinct. Still, they are excellent vocabulary and grammar aids one should have, either on your tablet or your desk. In my generation, these things were coveted gifts one received from parents and grandparents when you moved into middle school or high school. The internet wasn't there to lessen the workload. These books are timeless, and even though I do most of my writing using my laptop, I still enjoy flipping through actual pages of a book to find that which I seek.

This dictionary / thesaurus combination book is serving its purpose well for my two elementary aged boys. They keep it in a handy place and occasionally will look up words for reading or writing assignments. It is a soft cover book which does not take up too much space and the book has vast enough content that most words my young boys look up will be found in there. While it has become easier to simply search-engine words in a computer, knowing how to navigate an actual book is a skill I think it is important for my kids to know.

Definitions are in regular print and synonyms are in Gray beneath each word.. Nice that they're combined so you don't have to search twice. Got it for my son so he wouldn't rely on the internet to search for vocabulary definitions. He thinks it's torture. Totally worth every penny. I just wish it was hard back because we've had it maybe a couple weeks and the paper cover is already all torn up.

This review is for the Kindle Fire version only. The dictionary is absolutely useless.It does not have a search function for looking for words, it does not have an index so you could at least go to the beginning letter of the word you want, it does not have page numbers so you could guess as to what might be the general area a word might be at.You have to flip through individual pages just like you are reading a book.This is complete junk and is useless as a reference book. It would be quicker to drive to the store and by a paper bound dictionary to look the word up then it would be to use this dictionary.I am going to be contacting the seller and asking for my money back, I will never use this dictionary.

The miracle of this volume is a word with a definition followed by synonyms and antonyms where applicable. It could lead one's mind to wander, follow a journey of related words. For my 4th grader whose mom points him to the googleverse, this is a godsend.

Actually, I would prefer to give it zero stars. The problem with it is the search process: when you give it a term to look up, it starts at the beginning of the database, and searches through to the end. On my admittedly low end tablets, this is an intolerably long process and I find the whole package unuseable. If one could search between word lookup and thesaurus search it would probably be usable. However, they have not made this capability, if it exists, discoverable. I will look into returning it for just the dictionary. Thumbs down on this product unless you have a blazingly fast tablet.

While there is some rather mundane philosophizing about the need to preserve a diversity of cultures, most of the book deals with the personalities and mores of this fascinating sliver of humanity.Lamaleran culture revolves around the hunting of whales and so a lot of the work is devoted to blow by blow descriptions of harpooning and the ultimate slaying of these animals. Readers expecting typical anthropological data like rituals, myths and social hierarchies will be mostly disappointed.What one does get is a depiction of a tribe torn between adherence to ancestral ways and the possibilities of modernity. The extent to which one will enjoy this book will vary depending on one’s interest in primitive civilizations—particularly those which are hunter based—and the extent to which one is drawn in by the personal stories the author narrates.Personally, I thought the author has nobly contributed to a somewhat ignoble literary tradition. He has depicted a tribe still caught in a mostly prehistoric way of life without sentimentalizing their personalities or writing a hagiographic account of their way of life.Clearly, the Lamalerans have not had a major effect on world history. But the author succeeds in describing their unique culture to such an extent that a compelling case is made for the need to preserve humankind’s cultural diversity.If descriptions of far-off and completely different civilizations are to one’s liking than the Last Whalers is probably a good choice. If one is prepared for bloody hunting scenes and short shrift given to traditional cultural topics then the extraordinary actions of the author in learning the Lamaleran dialect and living among them for extensive periods will lead to a rather gripping narrative. In short, a unique contribution to ethnography that is written for the public and not just for anthropologists. Well worth reading.

The Last Whalers is an absolutely extraordinary work. Clark’s portrayal of the Lamalerans, a hunter-gatherer tribe inhabiting a remote Indonesian island, is both fascinating and moving. He expertly shows how the Lamalerans hunt the largest carnivore in history, the sperm whale, using centuries-old technology. By having lived amongst the tribe across three years, the author is able to describe the hunts in stunning and dramatic detail, with the insight of someone intimately familiar with not only the mechanics of the process, but also the history, culture, and people of Lamalera.The stories of the Lamalerans themselves are even more gripping--from a young orphaned whaler waiting for his big break to an aging legendary harpooner struggling to understand his son’s resistance to the traditional way of life. They bravely stand up to the forces of modernization, largely refusing modern technology that would make the hunts easier and far less dangerous, and relying on bartering and gift-giving instead of paper currency. They hold on to the ways of their ancestors, believing that their tradition--however inconvenient--contains their essence, and that by giving it up, they may lose what it means for them to live.The Last Whalers reminds us to consider what we may be losing as we welcome the latest technology and conveniences with open arms. The Last Whalers often reads like a novel as individual villagers share their lives. This a a book about people whose traditional way of life is hanging on by a finger nail. Modern methods of whale and manta ray fishing have almost overcome the practices of centuries. Spiritual beliefs wither away but have not quite expired. These isolated villages on islands in the Sunda Sea are now a part of today's world. This carefully researched book memorializes them and their inhabitants.

The Pastor's CSB is perfectly formatted and constructed for pastoral ministry.Three ribbons are a really helpful feature that I really like because it allows me to mark places in both the OT and NT as I progress through books with one extra ribbon to mark places as I move around the Bible.The size is about the same as my Wide-Margin NASB, and quite a bit bigger than my compact NIV.The margins are not as wide as my NASB, but they are wide enough to make clear notes.The box it comes in is of good construction and I convert the box into a carrying case so that my Bible doesn't get crushed in my backpack or satchel while out doing meetings.The one downside that I've noticed is that the construction in the binding is already tearing a little bit - keep in mind I travel and am in my Bible constantly everyday: I read on the bus while on my way to visit people, I read at meetings, preach from this Bible, study from this Bible (it probably gets 20 to 30 hours of use every week). So this is heavy usage, but it will probably require a rebinding at this rate in 2 to 3 years (I'm ok with that).And the translation is remarkable! My translation combo is the NASB, CSB, NIV, and I am so very happy to have the CSB as one of my primary translations. The consistency and clarity of this translation is incredible. I've found that this Bible is frequently more accurate than the NASB and often as clear as the NIV. You lose some of the underlying structure preserved in the NASB (which is why it is "clunky" reading), but it is easier to spot the translation decisions than the NIV.Lastly, the pastoral helps are good quality and non-intrusive. I like that the "special event" outlines are in the middle, and that the articles are in the back. I have enjoyed and been challenged by the articles. And the "go to passages" have given me something to think about in my pastoral counsel - sometimes even challenging me to think deeper on certain passages about how they can be applied to different situations.

I ordered two of these Bibles. Both were plagued with manufacturing defects. I ended up returning both of them for a refund. It's unfortunate because the *design* was beautiful, but the *quality* of the end product is awful.

I am still enjoying what I am reading and finding.Holman Bible Publishers graciously agreed to send me a few different editions to look over and review, and I hope to get to all three soon.Today, I am reviewing the CSB Pastor’s Bible.As far as I know, for the time being, if you want a single-column Bible in the CSB, you only have two options: the CSB Reader’s Bible, which I already reviewed, and the CSB Pastor’s Bible. I do believe they have another personal size single-column being released later in 2018, but I’m not sure when it will be available exactly.Some of the basic information for this Bible, from the back of the box, are that it has a smyth-sewn binding, black-letter text throughout (no words of Christ in red), and 11-point type (the Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible has 9.5-point type). Unlike the Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible, there are no cross-references in the Pastor’s Bible. It comes with three ribbon markers (one black, one red, and one white). The edition I received is a black LeatherTouch, and it has silver gilding on the edges. It has all the CSB footnotes throughout, and the CSB topical subheadings are included. As with most Bibles, it has a presentation page, a concordance in the back, and full-color maps. The perimeter has stitching around it: black on the outside and red on the inside. But the inside cover liner seems like it is glued on rather than sewn in.In terms of size and weight, it is certainly not the smallest and lightest Bible you can purchase. It is, however, still a good size for carrying to church, unlike some of the massive study Bibles out there. Even if you don’t want to carry this one with you, it is good for keeping at home to read.There appears to be a decent amount of margin space in the Pastor’s Bible for those who like to make notes while they are reading. No, it is not a wide-margin Bible, per se, but it has more space than some Bibles do in the margins.The Pastor’s Bible is designed to be a CSB resources specifically for pastors. After the book of Psalms, it includes a section for wedding ceremonies (classical and contemporary), information on funeral preparation, and some funeral sermons.The funeral preparation is broken down into a few tips with detailed information under each one: what to do on receiving notification of death, what to do when visiting in the home, what to do when scheduling the service, what to do during the funeral home visit, what to do during the service, what to do when concluding the service, and what to do at the graveside.The funeral sermons include a basic funeral sermon, one for a funeral for a child, one for a funeral for a student, and one for a funeral for a suicide victim.At the end of the Bible, there are various pastoral helps. These include a “where to turn” section with Scripture references to help, “A Brief Biblical Theology of Leadership,” “Eight Traits of Effective Church Leaders,” “Pastor, Find Your Identity in Christ,” “Glorifying God in Your Ministry,” “What is Biblical Preaching?,” “Preaching Christ from All the Scriptures,” “What is Doctrinal Preaching?,” “Four Keys for Giving an Effective Invitation,” “Five Ways to Improve Congregational Singing,” “Soul Care: Walking with Others in Wisdom and Love,” “Letter to the Church,” “Five Steps to Start and Keep an Evangelistic Culture,” “How Do You Disciple Others?,” “The One Thing You Must Do as a Student Pastor,” and “Sharing the Gospel with Children.” The last two articles demonstrate that this Bible is equally valuable for youth and children pastors, as well as senior pastors.While it is geared toward pastors, I have seen many discuss their love for this Bible merely because of the large print and single-column format, so if you are not a pastor, don’t rule out this Bible, thinking it is irrelevant to you. I think everyone should read this book and watch the series. Very intriguing and original story that I think has parallels to what is happening right now.

I realize that I am late coming to the ‘Handmaid’ party. It has been my intention to read it for some long time, but for some reason that I don’t fully understand, I was intimidated by the gravity of the book. I really wanted to be impressed, but Atwood’s view of a dark dystopian society left me depressed, confused and ultimately bored.I confess, I couldn’t finish the book. I couldn’t force myself to endure more than 115 pages peppered with complete and unnecessary gibberish. ‘If I have an egg, what more can I want?’ There are tons of this fluff.Atwood’s view of the future, and I assume that’s what I think we must consider that she intends, is poppycock. A nightmare with no beginning, middle or end. If this is what is in store for us, count me out.I was interested in a storyline or two along the way, but the author refused to develop them, instead droning on and on about meaningless details in the heroine’s life, or existence.I couldn’t go any further. My mind kept drifting to all the really entertaining stories out there, waiting to be read and enjoyed. Why was I wasting precious time reading tripe?

I first read The Handmaid's Tale around the time it was published in 1986. I was just 22, a sheltered young thing. I recall wondering what everyone was raving about, since only the top story layer of the book connected for me. Now, with decades of life experience behind me, I see that this is a deeply moving, complex book. I'm so glad I decide to read again just at this moment in time.You would think that something written thirty years ago would seem dated. But that wasn't the case for me. If anything, I think there are so many things imagined in the book which have become more possible today instead of less. In a sense, this is a cautionary tale that a large art of the population ignored or misunderstood.More than ever, we should be reading this and sharing it with the young women in our lives. And discussing it with them, so they see more of the depth than my 22-year-old self did.Margaret Atwood imagined a world where a totalitarian power went into action against foreign zealots and their own people's "wanton" behavior. This power was meant to make the world better, but it also created a world of highly distinct "haves" and "have nots."She says, “Better never means better for everyone... It always means worse, for some.” It might be just me (although I suspect not) but this sure sounds like what we often hear today on the news and in conversations.Reading this at the end of 2016 after a brutal election cycle, the following quote from Atwood seems both wise and horrible. Have we not been hearing about people who feel invisible?“We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories"Atwood's Republic of Gilead gives people one-dimensional functions. Correction - she gives women one-dimensional functions. They are Wives, Marthas, Handmaids, Aunts, or Unwomen (and a few more which would be spoilers). Unwomen are rebels, likely to be banished to the toxic waste dumps of the colonies. Everyone else plays a part in the singular female focus - procreation. As I read, I wondered what category I'd fall into should I have the bad luck to land in Gilead. The women there have no layers of life or experience. They are expected only to fulfill their narrow role.Why is procreation such a focus? Because of falling birth rates among white people. This book doesn't discuss race except one small spot near the end. It's as if there is only one race in Gilead. And the only people in that race with any power are men.The main character, Offred (literally of Fred named after the Commander she serves) is the perfect blend of weak and strong. She tells us of her past and says, “When we think of the past it's the beautiful things we pick out. We want to believe it was all like that.” But her life is not beautiful. And Atwood straddles the line of past and present, sending back and forth in a way that keeps you wanting more. Just as Offred wants more. Just as we all want more for ourselves and the generations of women coming after us.If you read this book long ago, pick it up again. If you haven't yet read it, move it up to the top of your TBR. Buy it for friends. Buy for your sons and daughters. Use it to teach and to learn what kind of world we could be if we stop valuing the diversity of all people.

Perfect last line to this book as I was left with so many questions at the end...the first of which was simply, "Huh?".This book confused me. Given all of the hype around it, I was expecting much more from this book. It was decent and I can completely understand how it would translate well into a mini-series or movie...but I just couldn't get my head around how/why things changed so quickly in society...over night, all women's rights were taken away but there seemed to be little information as to who or why. I was further confused by tourists coming into Gilead...why were there fully functioning societies outside of Gilead that seem to have been unaffected by whatever caused this tremendous shift in US society. How could this have gone on for so long afterwards without a civil war of sorts breaking out. Without having more information of the total collapse of society and a little more longevity of what lead to the collapse, it was hard to buy into this tale.If I could buy into the collapse of society and the development of Gilead to save the human race, there just wasn't enough information on how the Handmaids, the Aunts, etc were chosen, why they took healthy children away from their birth families and assigned the mothers of those children to other households for procreation...none of it made much sense. Also, what happened to the women in the colonies, the "unbabies", etc.There was a great core to this story, just not enough detail to support any of it so I was very disappointed in the end.

There was so much great hype about the television series that I was eager to read the book. Very interesting story. But I was greatly disappointed that the ending was full of holes. The main character had to guard her every thought, yet the ending reveals the story is being told based on her diary. Even if she'd had writing materials, which she didn't, she'd never have dared write down her thoughts and risk the results of exposure. Big let down.

I have to admit while parts of this novel where intriguing, most of it, I found difficult get through. The beginning until half way through was quite boring and if it hadn't been a required text for class I would've dropped it. On the other hand it was different and lacked the cliche main character that fights for freedom and justice, but then again that's the kind of character I like. I do recommend trying it for yourself as it wasn't a terrible read. I loved the ending though. It was open ended leaving you able to create an ending that you would like to have happened.

About the Author

Gabriel García Márquez was born in Colombia in 1927. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982. He is the author of many works of fiction and nonfiction, including One Hundred Years of Solitude, Love In The Time Cholera, The Autumn Of The Patriarch, The General In His Labyrinth, and News Of A Kidnapping. He died in 2014.This book is translated by Edith Grossman, widely recognized as the preeminent Spanish to English translator of our time.

This story is based on a girl's body that was dug up that had long flowing hair. This story tell when the girl, Maria was born, there was a promise that her hair would not be cut until her wedding if she were allowed to survive. As she grew, this promise was kept and at 12 she had hair that flowed down her legs.One day Maria was out in the market and was bitten by a rabid dog on her ankle. Time went by and still her ankle was inflamed, but she showed no symptoms of rabies.This is a story of love between her and Father Delaura. But it didn't have as much love in it as I had hoped. There was actually instalove, which was premature because he loved her in his dream before he even met her. There wasn't a lot of falling into it on Delaura's side of things.This is a book that is rich is culture and it's very well written but it wasn't for me. I wanted more from it and while it is supposed to be a short read, I felt we spent more time getting to know the circumstances that surrounded Maria instead of getting to know Maria herself.

I guess it goes without saying that Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a modern master and Of Love And Other Demons (1994) reflects this mastery. It reads like a classic, it is a story of love, faith, ignorance, and reflects the history of the new world in the shadow of Europe. As I read it, it felt as if it was a classic text passed down from generation to generation-it seems curious that such a novel could have been written in modern times. Marquez creates a time machine that takes us back to a time that was more focused on religion and heresy than science, but also creates a timeless love story in the process. Stylistically it is such a pleasure to make one's way through the prose. Another classic form a modern master.

About:Ninety three days after being bitten by a rabid dog and still not showing any signs of rabies, twelve year old Sierva Maria de Todos los Angeles is put in a convent for observation. Sierva Maria has been put through a series of painful and uncomfortable remedies in order to try and fight the infection that might take her young life.Her mother and father dislike each other immensely and have allowed the girl to be raised in the slave quarters near their home. This has led Sierva Maria to speak in an African tongue, adopt African traditions and not be close to either of her parents.Bernarda Cabrera, Sierva Maria's mother, is addicted to sex, cacao and fermented honey. Bernarda slowly deteriorates due to her way of living. Her father, Don Ygnacio, lives a quiet life and although his daughter has been left to live with the slaves, he tries to amend this wrongdoing and bring her home.Once inside the convent, thirty six year old Father Cayetano Delaura is assigned Sierva Maria's case and is put in charge of performing her exorcism. Delaura is a quiet intellectual and a lover of books.He becomes smitten by the young girl and makes it his mission to prove that she is not possessed. By doing so he will improve her living conditions and save her from the grueling ordeal of an exorcism.My Thoughts:I have a love hate relationship with Marquez. He pisses me off but I can't seem to break up with him. This time around, he didn't make me too angry, he mostly mesmerized me with this beautifully written, yet strange tale.Both love and demons play a part in this surreal story. I found Sierva Maria to behave as I'd expect a young spoiled girl abandoned by her parents would. Her behavior as a result of this poor parenting leads her to lie constantly and she even goes along pretending she is possessed.Sierva Maria's beautiful red hair has been promised to the Virgin Mary, it must not be cut until the day she marries. When loose, it trails down to her feet.I found Father Delaura's character to be passionate, this lover of books encloses himself in his room and read for hours every day.Bernarda, Sierva Maria's mother was another character that had me shocked with her behavior and some truths that she reveals towards the end of the story.Sierva's father, Don Ygnacio is a strange and complicated man. He seems not to care about his daughter, but then again he seems like he might love her after all.Exorcisms and being possessed by demons was considered a legitimate danger during the setting of this book and Márquez brings this aspect of the story out divinely. He weaves in magic and realism perfectly and left me wondering what was real and what was imaginary.I was both shocked and enthralled as I read this sad story about pain, heartache and faith. Highly recommended if you are a fan of Marquez or to those looking for a piece of fiction that will leave them a bit unsettled by its storyline yet mesmerized by its prose.The final paragraph in Of Love and Other Demons gave me chills. I can't remember a book ever having that effect on me before."He had no room in his heart for anything but Sierva Maria, and even so it was not large enough to hold her. He was convinced that no oceans or mountains, no laws of earth or heaven, no powers of hell could keep them apart."p.122, Of Love and Other Demons

I recently read the author's acclaimed work "Love in the Time of Cholera" and enjoyed it very much. It spurred me to seek out more work by Marquez, hence this and several others that I recently purchased. My second foray into Marquez was "One Hundred Years of Solitude". I was very disappointed in that novel and concerned that I'd perhaps already seen the best he had to offer. Luckily, I found this novella to be every bit as enjoyable as LitToC.Marquez's writing is certainly unique in its earthiness. He deals with such subjects as sex, bodily functions and graphic illness as if they are parts of everyday life ... because they are. It is refreshing.Marquez is also known as one of the leading practitioners of the literary device of "magical realism" in which events are introduced into the story which are quite fantastic (for example, a character being swept away into the sky as though taken to heaven, a rain event that lasts over four years followed by an absolute drought of ten years). This was a major device used in One Hundred Years of Solitude and perhaps contributed to my dissatisfaction with that work. In any event, both LitToC and Love and Other Demons use this literary device sparingly if at all.This relatively short work (readable in one or two sittings) focuses on a young woman born to feckless and irresponsible aristocrats. Neither parent cares for the child and she is raised in the slave quarters. Her unorthodox upbringing gives rise to behavior that lead many to suspect her of possession by demons. A local churchman is tasked with performing an exorcism, but instead falls madly and hopelessly in love with her, a love that is never consummated. For those familiar with Marquez, it should be no surprise that a happy ending is not to be expected.The author's writing is indisputably beautiful and at times mesmerizing. Much like LitToC, this is a haunting and compelling story, filled with sadness and regret. I can highly recommend this short work as a precursor to the much longer and complex LitToC. If you enjoy this, you'll almost certainly enjoy the latter.
