Called by Mark Bittman "The best cookbook that no one's ever heard of", The Old World Kitchen is the American edition of European Peasant Cookery, first published in 1980. OWK was published in 1986 in the US, went OOP for many years, and was republished in 2013. The dates are important because they explain much about this important cookbook. Written over the span of twenty years before the fall of the Iron Curtain, before the Internet era, before globalization, and above all, before coffee-table cookbooks and food blogging, OWC was written during a time when rural European food traditions were still strong, when people still cooked local foods from scratch, when they shopped at open markets and single-category food stores (the butchershop, the fishmonger's, the bakery, etc.) and supermarkets were uncommon, and industrial food processing was virtually unknown in much of Europe.OWK was the first cookbook by Elisabeth Luard, who is now revered as one of Britain's finest food writers. Luard was the step-daughter of a diplomat and lived in many different places while she was growing up. After marriage, she lived with her family in Andalusia, Spain as well as in rural France, Italy, and Wales. OWK is based on her first-hand exposure to many different European cuisines as well as on her own meticulous research. OWK is book for readers who love to cook, and for cooks who love to read. In it, Luard attempted to discover the commonalities of European cookery (to use the British term), so the recipes are grouped by category (vegetable dishes, corner cupboard dishes, shepherder's meats, and so forth), rather than by geography or ethnicity. Of the recipes that I've tried, all have come out wonderfully (something you can't take for granted with cookbooks, and certainly not with food bloggers).OWC is not without minor flaws. There are no photos. As in any general compilation, not every recipe is best in class. A few foreign food names are misspelled. Not all European cuisines are included, and the coverage is uneven. In some cases, Luard relied on written sources (which she acknowledges), rather than on first-hand knowledge. Despite all this, OWK is a remarkable, fascinating work that covers a subject not addressed adequately anywhere else. It is one of my favorite cookbooks, and it deserves every one of the five stars I'm giving it, and more.

I love this cookbook. It's full of recipes that take time and labor, and elevate inexpensive and basic ingredients into wonders. It's a joy to read as well, filled with stories about the dishes. The recipes are well explained, even the technical parts. I look forward to making many dishes from this book.

You will love this cookbook! Some of the recipes are a little hard to follow (I had to try the sourdough rye bread recipe twice, and it still did not come out perfect), but if you want to try cooking great food with minimalist ingredients, then this is the cookbook for you!

I read about this in a list of six favorite cookbooks by Mark Bittman, whom I admire, in The Week magazine. I was familiar with most of the cookbooks he mentioned, by the likes of Marcella Hazan, Julie Sahni, and Claudi Roden. But this was a new one to me, and it is a kick. Lots of rough peasant recipes from an wide range of cultures, all with an authentic feel. I am looking forward to lots of inspiration here.

I love this book!!!! I was looking for a cookbook on old european recipes and basic things Europeans did back in the day aka making smoked salmon, homemade cheese curds and boy have I found it! The author explains each recipe and whom she got the recipe from ( a little old authentic Italian woman) I just loved that! It's a wonderful cookbook and can double has an entertaining coffee table book for guests. Lots of history to discuss.

Garrigues & Dean (along with Cornell's Comstock Publishing) performed a virtual miracle in 2007 with the first edition of this work. Before then, birders in the field in Costa Rica had to use the superb but voluminous guide written by Stiles, Skutch & Gardner (1989), and they often resorted to separating the plates from the text for use in the field.This second edition is not so much revolution as evolution, but it does include illustrations of 64 species not previously covered. In addition, Robert Dean has replaced some species illustrations with portraits he deems improved, and he has added some "supplementary" images (in-flight, alternate plumages, etc.).The authors chose to follow the taxonomic nomenclature of Clements and a modified version of the Clements taxonomic sequence (not surprisingly retaining falcons with other diurnal raptors; inserting pigeons & doves, parrots and cuckoos between hummingbirds and trogons; and (perhaps most interesting of all) depicting the passerine swallows after the non-passerine swifts (also aerial specialists) and before the non-passerine hummingbirds). They believe these departures from taxonomic rigidity promote their goal of producing a guide that is more intuitively useful in the field, and I think they're right.Seabirds seen offshore in Costa Rican pelagic environs have been added to this second edition, as have species associated with Cocos Island (300 miles southwest of the mainland).Novice birders (and others) will appreciate the detailed descriptions & illustrations (six pages) of anatomical features (among the best I've found in any field guide). Birders new to Costa Rica and birders looking to diversify their Costa Rican birding experiences will value the brief chapter on climate and topography, including summaries of six different "life zones" and some of the ornithological features of each.Range maps are now color-coded for seasonality, and have been updated. Species illustrations are at least equal in quality to those of the first edition, and many birders would rate at least a few as improvements. Some of the brighter colors depicted on some species in my first edition seem somewhat more subdued in this new guide, but in most instances the differences are subtle.Inside the front cover (very conveniently) are images of adult vultures and raptors in flight.Congratulations to Richard Garrigues, Robert Dean and the folks at Comstock Publishing responsible for the Zona Tropical series.

I bought this for my trip to Costa Rica and it's been quite handy. It's not a huge book so it's conceivable to carry it with you in the field when you're out, but I have chosen not (it's just big enough that you really have to want to take it out and I'm here conducting research, so I need to be carrying enough other things that it's not worth it to me). I think the pictures are well done and are big enough that you can pick out details. The distribution maps are great. It is a paperback, which is good because it makes it lighter, but also tends to curl up at the edges in the humidity. I don't love the organization of the bird groups, but I'm getting used to it, so that's a minor technicality. Of the bird books I've seen, this one is by far the best for this area and is an outstanding resource.

With so much eco-tourism in Costa Rica, I was happy to see the Birds of Costa Rica get published. With only Alexander Skutch's epic work in my library, where I had to tear out the bird illustrations in order to have a field reference guide, this work was very well received. I have not comments with regards to the technical aspects of this book, I am not an ornithologist, but clearly all the changes from the 1st to 2nd Edition have given me a compelling reason to re-study this particular edition. Several species have been reclassified in this work, but most noteworthy to me are the newly updated range maps that best capture the dynamics of the migratory species in Costa Rica. A must have if you are visiting Costa Rica ... at least to sneak in a Resplendent Quetzal or two. Thank you Mr. Garrigues!

I just returned from a non-birding trip to Costa Rica, and this guide got extensive use. Even without extensive prior study (poor planning on my part) I was able to make a lot more bird IDs than I expected on this trip, in large part because of the ease of use of this guide. Illustrations, text and range maps are all clear and informative. Two features I found particularly helpful were the raptors profiles inside the front cover, and the description of the climate and topography of Costa Rica. I was able to add two IDs just because of the ease of finding this when seeing a bird of prey soar overhead. And compare to many other guides which use this space for a guide to their species accounts or a map of their geographic coverage. My trip was limited to just Guanacaste, but reading about the climate and topography helped me better understand the geography of the country and the distribution of the avifauna, and also has me thinking about plans for future visits. A great little book for anyone visiting Costa Rica with an interest in birds, whether this is their primary purpose for travelling or not.

As you'd expect, we bought it to take to Costa Rica for a birding-oriented trip. The contents are good and seem accurate and we saw that most of the other people we ran into had the same book and were also using it handily. BUT THE BIGGEST FLAW IS THE @#$# INDEX! Many of the birds in the book, and that you'll hopefully see, are not in the index in the back or are mis-indexed. Everyone noticed it, and its a big deal when your guide says "its a _______", and you cannot find it but it IS in the book. Index missing or under a different name or ??????

In preparing for my first trip to Costa Rica solely for birdwatching, I bought this book along with the Zona Tropical Photo Guide to the Birds of Costa Rica, by Garrigues. The two books pair extremely well. This one is comprehensive, covering all possible species who might see, while the photo guide concentrates on the birds one is most likely to see, making it the primary guide I'm studying in the lead up to my trip. But I'll have the Garrigues & Dean with me as well, as it's coverage is exhaustive. Both field guides are easy to use, well designed, attractive, and informative.

I really wish I had read this book in high school and better yet had a course in it. It would have saved me a lot of grief. As a society, we need to teach children how to deal with emotions. I wish I had not taken it out of the library because the code in the back only works for one person. So, I was not able to take the EQ (Emotional Intelligence)test. I may need to buy the book.I loved it all, but I have picked out my favorite parts of each section:Self Awareness Strategies:1. Ask others for feedback about how you handle your emotions and listen carefully to what they say.2. Weekly or bi-weekly take stock of your life and write down situations that you didn't deal with well and then list which quality that you wanted to honor but didn't. For example:Honesty is the quality and then write down a situation that I didn't handle well where I wasn't completely honest. The next time a situation like this comes up, I might deal with it differently because I will remember the list.Self Management Strategies:1. To prepare for change, make a list of things in my life that could possibly change and write down ideas for how I could deal with that. I really enjoyed doing this and it really has been helpful.Social Awareness Strategies:1. Become a great observer. Learn how to sense the mood of a room and check to see if your observations are correct.1. Listen. Listen. Listen. Don't interrupt.Relationship Management Strategies:1. Use these phrases more: "I am sorry." "Please" "Thank You"Fabulous book. I highly recommend it.

This could have the title " how to be a vulcan". Basically suggests how to recognize your own emotional triggers so you can be more logical.

This book is phenomenal at making you aware of both yourself and your surroundings. This should be required reading for leaders, managers and executives. Taken seriously, this book can help you evaluate yourself and reveal ways to grow and develop in ways you may not have ever considered. Easy to read and succinct. Great book!

Fast read with science based evidence and reasoning to get to the heart of the matter!

This book was VERY disappointing! It’s basically an internet listicle of really shallow tips. Like “listen” and “write down how you’re feeling”. I would hardly call this a self help book - it’s not any better than a free online article. Books like difficult conversations or even the oldie learned optimism are much better.

When I began reading this novel, I was shocked to learn Raven had finally become a pastor after all of the pressure she put on Dillon to become his co-pastor in the previous book. Many surprises were noted in its contents; however, readers were again reminded there are consequences for behavior. I was happy when Kane was able to determine who the true Raven was. Porsha did not end up smelling like a rose either. Kimberla is one of my favorite authors; one cannot predict the ending. This is one of the characteristics of a great storyteller.. In writing a sequel, it is always a positive idea to share tidbits of the previous story. This book includes greed, lust, revenge, distrust, repentance, self-destruction, and entitlement. I love the Curtis Black series. Continue expanding on the characters and where life has led them. I am always left wanting to read more.

I highly anticipated this book and I was not disappointed, although some of the antics of the characters were familiar from previous books. Greed, adultery and jealousy were prevalent themes throughout the book, and Raven displayed them all. This woman had no redeeming qualities and I found myself rooting for her downfall as bad as that may sound. She just seemed like the past scheming Charlotte Black reincarnated. The only nice thing I can say about her is that she kept me entertained and I couldn't wait to see what foolishness she would do next. Porsha worked my nerves too, but at least she had some likeable qualities. I'm not sure how I felt about Dillan's reemergence because although on the surface he seemed to have made a change for the better, his actions proved that he could revert back to his old ways when it suited him. Overall, I enjoyed this latest installment of the Reverend Curtis Black series.

I enjoy reading Kimberla Lawson Roby writings. She has done an outstanding job in writing this novel. This book is about two women who have serious issues. Raven is looking for power and Porsha is looking for love in all of the wrong places. They both take on the role of ministers but they haven't really been called. We should be aware of false prophets. Just following their journey in this book was very interesting. It makes you wonder what individuals will do to obtain things they want in life.I am looking forward to reading more by this author. Great job Kimberla Lawson Roby.

I went thru a range of emotions, but I will re-read this. Book again. Raven is still selfish and ask centered, and seeking revenge until collection time shows up, D.C. Is Back. Porsha is still hooked up with yet another married man, but is feeling God's pull on her life. Dillon also returns and shakes up Porsha and Raven. Fantastic read, the passages make you realized that God is still in charge!!!!

Vanity. One of the 7 deadly sins. That’s what she should have titled this book cause everybody seems to look for acceptance and praise. Isn’t those the charteristics that had Lucifer booted from heaven.As the story dragged on I didn’t see the story progressing. I’m sure the author is tired of writing about Curtis black but this story line was stale.I can guarantee deception and lies are running rampant in the church. She could get fresh storylines from any church in America. Plus it was very hard to get a connection with that characters because she told the story instead of showed the story which made the story slowdown. I believe the author is tired cause there is nothing going on in this book and there were plenty of opportunities for the story to pick up.

The first book in this series that didn't really focus on any of the primary members of the Black family. It was interesting to watch how things unfolded with the scorned wife and mistress. You can choose to heal or wallow in sorrow and sink deeper into the abyss. Raven chose the latter, much to her demise. As always, Kimberla delivered a good read!! I look forward to hopefully another in the series that I can never put down!

Mrs. Kimberly L. Rob! Have ALWAYS been my favorite author I am really behind on my reading her books. but life have away of changing things. It's really sad how people called themselves instead of God calling them to ministry. This is truly a page turner. Raven and Porsha, and Dillon, my my my I couldn't put it down once I started reading I believe Dillion really needs to go to church and give his life to Christ now that Mrs. Robby will be something else.... great job as always thank God, for your gift to all old and new readers. The narrative is very fluid and I like the way the author swings between (i) the history of financial markets in 70/80’s, (ii) the rise and fall of Salomon Brothers and (iii) his own personal experiences inside the firm. The amplitude of the themes changes a lot, from broad to narrower topics, but the author manages to crisscross between them while holding the links and maintaining the flow. Besides, it is interesting to see how transparently the author shows that some prejudices people have about banks and financial markets professionals were intensely true. The book made me wonder how it may have been to live in such a unique work place and to regularly sleep and dine at places perhaps as impressive as some salaries mentioned: Le Périgord, Bristol, Tante Claire, Plaza Athenée, Claridge's, everything charged to the firm’s expense account. As the book mentions, some traders viewed the expense account as a soft-dollar compensation system.

Michael Lewis wrote this, his first book, in 1989. I was thirteen years old when it was released - it was one of the rare nonfiction books that received enough fanfare and furor that it penetrated my world. I didn't read it, of course, but I was aware of it because it was talked about on a variety of TV shows and news broadcasts.I didn't read a Lewis book until Moneyball, but after that I was hooked and gobbled up The Big Short, Flashboys and the Undoing Project. After finishing his book on those Israeli psychologists, I picked up Boomerang, The Losers, The New New Thing and now Liar's Poker. Despite enjoying all of the aforementioned books (The Losers is a dream for people that follow politics), I was hesitant about Liar's Poker because I figured it was a dated book about Wall Street in the 1980s.I am pleased to say that my concerns turned out to be unjustified. After graduating from the London School of Economics, Lewis fell into a job at Salomon Brothers (it was eventually absorbed into Citigroup). His first few months were spent with 120+ other young professionals with newly minted premium degrees (lots of Harvard and Stanford MBAs) in the Salomon Brothers highly regarded training course (an indoctrination series, really).A few chapters covers the training course and the various professionals they were exposed to, as well as a history of both Salomon Brothers and the bond market. Lewis goes to work in the London office, where he was moved from a lowly trainee to a lowly geek. He learns at the heels of two extremely gifted salesmen and within six months, after completing a major trade, grows from a geek to a BSD (read the book).Lewis was sitting next to the CEO of Salomon Brothers on the day of the Black Monday Crash and provides us with the helpless reactions of the traders on the floor, as well as the calculating response of his two mentors. Less than a year after the crash, Lewis left Wall Street because the belief in the value of money and those who made it had been shattered (he also acknowledges that he made enough to be comfortable and obviously wanted to write a book).The housing collapse and stock market crash of 07-08 had it's roots in the 1980s scenes where Lewis describes the unscrupulous taking advantage of customers and the belief by the Street that the government would always bail them out. 28 years after it was first published, the book is still relevant and quite entertaining.

Michael Lewis has an uncanny ability to take a subject----any subject----even one as typically "mundane" and boring as the financial world, and somehow bringing it to life in such a way that the reader is riveted from start to finish. I first read this book when it was new and was utterly astounded by his humor and ability to explain even the most convoluted economic concepts and turn them into "page turning" reading. I have since read/purchased all of his books, as well as having read his articles in Vanity Fair, and have yet to be disappointed. Whether he is entering the world of Silicon Valley's techie boom, NFL football, or the economic crisis in the Euro Zone he never fails to deliver a brilliantly written, absorbing, and somehow humorous take on his subject. I am certain that there is no topic which he cannot investigate and write about in the most entertaining yet informative way. This is a replacement copy of my original book which has been lost in our library's cosmos, but it is one that I simply must own. Long before Leo's "Wolf of Wall Street" or Michael Douglas's "Greed is Good" portrayal, there was Michael Lewis' spot-on depiction of the crazy 80's Wall Street boom and its excess. I really can't speak highly enough of Mr. Lewis' talent and writing ability.

I am a huge Michael Lewis fan and this was the one book of his that I had not read. The book, in my opinion, is by far his weakest one - which is understandable as I believe this is one of his earlier works. The book follows his short career at Saloman Brothers in the 1980's. It is interesting to see inside of a Wall Street firm at that time and to see the ethics (or lack thereof) - only on Wall Street is it acceptable to use your "customers" as a place to offload junk product that you do not want to keep for yourself. The book is really a timeline of his employment at Salmon Brothers and, unlike his other books, really lacks any other central theme to hold it together. It is mildly entertaining, but if this had been the first book of his I read, I would have missed out reading all his other fantastic books.

Lewis is prolific and entertaining. I have read only half of the books he has written but someday I will have read them all - he's that good. This book describes his early days, just out of college, as an investment banker. The locker room language may be a bit coarse for some readers; this book was not on my church's book club list. It is funny, probably 97% true and mainly a good read. The mammoth-sized egos which are depicted are similar to what I have seen in many sales environments and the military where everything seems and may even be, bigger than life.On more than one occasion, I had to stop reading because I was laughing so hard, wondering, "Did he really say that?! Wow! Are there really people like that?!" My early life in Manhattan, right after college was an adventure, but a mild one compared to the stories in this book.

About the Author

Amy Myers, M.D., is a specialist in autoimmune diseases whose career was set in motion by her own experience dealing with autoimmune issues. Myers graduated cum laude from the Honors College at the University of South Carolina and earned her medical degree at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. After completing her residency in emergency medicine at the University of Maryland, she founded the nationally renowned functional medicine center Austin UltraHealth, where she currently serves as its medical director.

This is an expensive cookbook but at least it is hard cover so I gave it 2 stars. Dr. Myers recommends a lot of inflammatory recipes with high FODMAP foods, which is a diet used for SIBO and IBS patients by the medical community. So if you are any of these people, do not purchase this book because it will cause greater problems with the digestive tract, inflammation, etc. She substitutes Casava and Tapioca flours to satisfy the carb cravings but again, these are high FODMAP ingredients and not only will you not lose weight, you will become increasingly more "autoimmune" hypersensitive. She has not done her research, in my opinion. It's a Paleo style cookbook of sorts, but Autoimmune it is not. In one recipe she combines apple and pear, two of the highest FODMAPs of the top 40 ingredients list you cannot have while you are healing. In case you didn'tknow, FODMAPs are the chemistry of foods and what each food does to the system to create leaky gut and dietary malabsorption by Monash University Laboratory. They are: Fructose (a Monosaccharide), Mannitol and Sorbitol (Polyols), Fructans and GOS (Oligosaccharides), and Lactose (a Disaccaride). I use a phone app for shopping and my gut is healing. Try doing low FODMAP for 10-12 weeks to address malnutrition, leaky gut, critical illness, mental illness, cognitive impairment, anxiety, inflammation, chronic fatigue, etc. This is far better than using a cookbook that has not been truly researched to enhance healing with autoimmune conditions. Good Authors for Autoimmune are: Dr. Izabella Wentz for Hashimoto's; Dr. Patsy Catsos, MS, RDN, LD for IBS ("The IBS Elimination Diet and Cookbook" from Amazon) for starters, and there are many, many more.

Much of the information & quite a few of the recipes are either already in her book (The Autoimmune Solution) or on her website. The recipes I tried did not taste good & were time consuming. I’ve disappointingly made Coconut Collagen Fuel Bites, Pesto Pizza, Root Vegetable Pancakes, Sweet Potato Biscuits and Turkey Pot Pie. “Peanut Butter” Cups, gross, don’t bother - the taste/texture was nowhere close to PB (I used coconut butter per recipe because I don’t like tiger nuts).What was good from the book? Salads, some of the soups & roasted vegetables from her recipes - all pretty basic and easily found elsewhere. Overall I have found better recipes on Pinterest (w/reviews from people who have actually made the recipes) - just search for AIP recipes.

Amy Myers reversed her own autoimmune condition by addressing the root causes of her illness and diet played a HUGE role. She continues to follow the same dietary program that she recommends to her patients and community.We actually ate out together in Melbourne at the recent Bioceuticals Symposium and I saw her put The Myers Way® (her proven program) of eating into practice at the restaurant, making sure everything she was eating was safe and would not trigger an autoimmune flare. Our server worked hard making sure all her questions were addressed in a satisfactory manner and she set a great example for all of us.She does this in her wonderful new cookbook, setting a great example and guiding you to make the right choices in order to reduce inflammation, heal your leaky gut and help you move toward the optimal health side of the autoimmune spectrum and stay there. Amy inspires you to cook delicious meals at the same time. She helps you change the way you look at food, both when you’re cooking at home for our families, and when we’re eating out and traveling.Some of the recipes I’m really looking forward to trying are the creamy zucchini-basil soup, the herbed roast chicken, the world’s best Asian flank steak, the rosemary sea-salt crackers (made with cassava flour), the spinach artichoke dip (I’ll replace the spinach with low-oxalate dino kale), raspberry cheesecake bites (I’ll make it with blueberries instead of high-oxalate raspberries), and the apple crisp.There is no perfect eating plan for everyone and Amy has created this eating plan and recipes to cater for the majority of those with an autoimmune condition. I really appreciate that recipes are marked as being autoimmune-friendly, thyroid-friendly, suitable for candida and SIBO, and low histamine. However, if you do have oxalate issues you will need to adjust some of the recipes. Also, if you have issues with collagen making your anxiety or insomnia worse then I recommend adding some protein powder to the recipes that call for gelatin or collagen (and even considering a trial of tryptophan).This cookbook is the perfect companion to The Autoimmune Solution, a wonderful book that introduced The Myers Way®, empowering so many to reverse their autoimmune conditions.It’s a wonderful new cookbook that inspires, guides and empowers and I’m going to be recommending this book to the anxious women in my community, many of whom also have an autoimmune condition.Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert and Nutritionist, author of "The Antianxiety Food Solution"

I have been cooking AIP for about 2 years and make lots of yummy stuff from unusual ingredients. I've learned how to cook without eggs, gluten and many other 'substitutions". Always looking for fun new recipes, I was excited to try this new cookbook. OMG!! Do not waste your money. The ingredients are great but the end products mediocre flavors, bad textures and are NOT crowd pleasers. I made the "Creamy"Ceasar dressing with preservative and thicker free canned coconut milk and ended up with a watery, bland "dip"/ dressing that ended up as a soup under the salad. The blackberry dressing was boring and also watery.Next came waffles. OMG....these turned into a gooey pile of (expensive!!!) dough that I had to waste. Our ingredients are pricey to just have to toss, not to mention food waste. So, I don't recommend this cookbook at all!!!!!!
