In a time when women barely held jobs, Marie-Madeleine Fourcade ran the largest espionage ring in France during WWII.Olson does a fabulous job of giving you the background of the country that led to their poor showing when Germany invaded. I had no idea of the political turmoil France was dealing with. In fact, I learned more from this book about international politics leading up to the war than I ever knew before. Olson also provides the necessary background on the Vichy government and the political warfare between generals de Gaulle and Giraud. She knows exactly how much information to provide without bogging the reading down.Olson keeps the book moving at a fast clip with short chapters. This nonfiction book read almost like a book of fiction. You get a true sense of the time and place. It’s a gripping book and some of the escapes would seem unbelievable if this were a book of fiction.This book was eye opening. I was astounded by the number of people who risked their lives, many of whom had no training and most of whom died. As Olson writes at the very end of the book “they served as an example ...of what ordinary people can do...when faced with existential threats to basic human rights.”I recommend this to anyone who enjoys history, even those who think they only enjoy historical fiction.My thanks to netgalley and Random House for an advance copy of this book.

Chalk up another outstanding WWII book for Lynne Olson! Overall, Madame Fourcade's Secret War is an educational, powerful, and intense read covering the Nazi takeover of France and the emergence of the French Resistance and underground Communist movement. The story is gripping, with tension and danger throughout. It is one of those books that is somewhat difficult to talk about without revealing plot elements.The book draws on interviews with the Alliance survivors and their families, plus various archives, to uncover a dark chapter of history that offers an inspiring portrait of ordinary people, of bravery and survival, and of the remarkable, enduring power of the human spirit. Such a large part of WWII history is revealed in heart-stopping and brutal detail. The Resistance fighters held various and often conflicting political views but were all committed to the overthrow of the Nazi occupation by whatever means possible. Fourcade's Alliance group was focused on gathering and disseminating intelligence, primarily to MI6.As one who appreciates history and genealogy and who had family members serving during WWII, I have found Lynne Olson's books to be among the best I have read regarding the war. Very readable, and almost impossible to put down. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Another great Lynne Olson book but the narrator is overly dramatic and totally ruins the audio edition. Buy the kindle edition or the physical book. It is a real disappointment to listen to this narrator reduce the quality of this book. With a different narrator who was not try to draw attention to herself and thus detract from Olson’s work I would have given this 5 stars. As it is I gave 4 stars only because Olson is such a good author.

I'm continuously in awe when I read accounts of ordinary men and women doing these extraordinary, courageous acts despite the dangers facing them. This book provides an in-depth look at one of the most successful underground French intelligence networks during WWII, Alliance. Even cooler is that it was run by a woman - Marie-Madeleine Fourcade. Truly incredible to hear about the work of the Alliance members, as well as the numerous citizens who put their lives on the line too to help them.There are several historical fiction books that deal with resistance/spy networks during this time period, but they typically skim over the full historical background and context. This book provided that missing element which I loved. It is a work of nonfiction, however it reads like a novel. I think it would be a great read for history fans and historical fiction fans alike.Thank you to Random House Publishing Group and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book.

Plus, it's much cheaper and you know exactly what went into it. You know the strain and whether pesticides were used on it. This is a wonderful gift for folks new to growing cannabis. Its format is simplistic and easy to understand without sacrificing the depth that helps you get a great grow. It does focus solely on indoor grows, so that’s something to consider. The illustrations by Paul Layzell are a stand out throughout the book. I look forward to jumping into my first grow with the help of this awesome and informative guide. Thanks Danny and keep up the great work!

Disappointed with this book. It is practically devoid of specific recommendations and specifics in general. I hoped this book would get me started growing cannabis but it will not. Huge rudimentary drawings, no photos, take up lots of space that should have been used for useful "how to do it" information. You can get much more specific info from the internet and YouTube than this book conveys and get it for free. I was swayed to purchase this book by its 5-star rave reviews but now I wonder if those reviews weren't unduly biased to boost book sales.

The book is a good one. Although I have researched the internet, there is useful information that I did not see on the internet. I recommend this book to add to your collection.

But what we can do is look at the historical and scientific evidence and try to explain (whether to others or to ourselves) why we believe what we believe.Not all 20 evidences are truly compelling. (If you reject creationism, for example, those chapters won't do anything for you.) But some of them really are, and for that reason, you might want to pick this book up.However, be aware: You can show someone all the evidence there is for the historical reliability of the Gospels and the fact that Jesus did indeed live and die on this earth, but you can never convince someone that doesn't want to know. To paraphrase C.S. Lewis, either we will say to God, "thy will be done," or he will say to us, "THY will be done." Happy reading.

I would consider this book to be a great starting point for studying apologetics (the study and defense of the Divine origin and authority of Christianity). The authors, both strong academics, disseminate large amounts of information, and make it very understandable for anyone who reads this. In addition to this, they offer other books at the end of each chapter, for further study. They also offer a study guide at the end, and very thorough footnotes. This is a book that ALL Christians should read, as it gives a very clear argument for the faith we profess. Additionally, this would make a great book to use as a study guide for a small group. I highly recommend this book!

I mostly liked the book. It uses good arguments to direct readers towards the conclusion that God exists, and showing how weak is the dominant skepticism of the day, if we think about it. It is a pity that authors embrace such a deeply anti-catholic perspective, especially as they keep talking about “the church”. The final chapters were pretty shocking to me with respect to this. Didn’t protestants engage in wars too? Authors clearly try to claim the good of Christianity to their side and the bad to the Catholics. Can’t be done. They should either start the clock on the day their specific denomination was founded (e.g. 1517), or take everything from the beginning. Otherwise it is cherry picking.

It's an adequate book if you're already a Christian and simply looking for arguments with which to further confirm and insulate your faith. However, if you're an unbeliever and you have well thought out and rational reasons for your unbelief, I seriously doubt that you will find anything here that is intellectually destabilizing enough to convince you that your unbelief is unjustified.

Christians who already have taken that leap of faith may want a refresher on why that was a good decision. But even skeptics will get plenty to think about. No one ever asks you to check your brains at the door when you come to Christ.

Two different indexes, a sense of humor, explaining how and why the big bang theory would never have worked, logic, math, Bible verses. Saving to my Kindle favorites right now.

It was good yes, but not easy to read. This one was more for the scholarly also. It does have a lot of figures, some that I can't east count to. Some things to be honest was a bit over my head and would be for the vast majority. If you are an unbeliever or an atheist, then this book would make a good read though, it has all the science you love to refer to and much of it rather than refuting the biblical claim enhances it. Try it out you might just like it.

This book has been extremely well researched giving me (a former NYCity Opera singer) some background information I was not previously aware of, thus increasing my already-substantial respect for Julius Rudel and others involved in the evolution of the company from downtown to Lincoln Center. Without the European approach to the arts, with financial support from the government, taking on this task in America is a monumental effort requiring equal portions of foresight, talent and vision, making a success medal-worthy. Waleson's writing style keeps me glued to the book for the following info. I'm now about two-thirds through it.

I would think that anyone concerned about *any* professional performing arts institution would find *Mad Scenes* interesting. And it should be required reading for any board member of such an institution.

Yes, it's written more like a business profile than a book about opera, but such accounts aren't easy to come by. The last chapter, which highlights new directions in US opera production, is informative, but the complete story of the NYCO's rise and fall is very interesting as well. NYCO may have had cheap ticket prices, but it was still a plaything for the wealthy people who made up the board.

I liked the straight forward approach to the reasons the NYCO is no more. Having worked there, it answered lots of questions for me.
