This book has been extremely well researched giving me (a former NYCity Opera singer) some background information I was not previously aware of, thus increasing my already-substantial respect for Julius Rudel and others involved in the evolution of the company from downtown to Lincoln Center. Without the European approach to the arts, with financial support from the government, taking on this task in America is a monumental effort requiring equal portions of foresight, talent and vision, making a success medal-worthy. Waleson's writing style keeps me glued to the book for the following info. I'm now about two-thirds through it.
I would think that anyone concerned about *any* professional performing arts institution would find *Mad Scenes* interesting. And it should be required reading for any board member of such an institution.
Yes, it's written more like a business profile than a book about opera, but such accounts aren't easy to come by. The last chapter, which highlights new directions in US opera production, is informative, but the complete story of the NYCO's rise and fall is very interesting as well. NYCO may have had cheap ticket prices, but it was still a plaything for the wealthy people who made up the board.
I liked the straight forward approach to the reasons the NYCO is no more. Having worked there, it answered lots of questions for me.
interesting read
This book is a “must read†for anyone who cares about the future of opera in America.
I wanted to perform a death scene on stage while singing a tortured aria, because my heart was so broken after reading Mad Scenes and Exit Arias: The Death of the New York City Opera and the Future of Opera in America. I come from Cincinnati, where our storied opera company used to perform at the Cincinnati Zoo, where elephants once duetting with coloraturas. And a good friend’s son directs our current opera crew, so this totally engrossing account hit close to home.Heidi Waleson, Wall Street Journal opera critic, offers a stunning narrative history of New York City Opera’s bankruptcy and what it portends for the future of the arts. Beautifully written and extensively researched, Mad Scenes and Exit Arias views the opera’s demise as not just the loss of a beloved institution, but as a harbinger of what’s to come, with lessons learned about needed change for cultural institutions to thrive. Highly recommended for all opera buffs and those concerned about the future of arts in our country. 5/5Pub Date 02 Oct 2018Thanks to Henry Holt & Company and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are fully mine.#MadScenesAndExitArias #NetGalley
According to the coroner, in 1975, Norman Treigle's death “was definitely not a suicide,†despite what the author writes in this new book. The official report declared the same, and the various life-insurance policies were collected, etc. The details were published, in 2006, in "Strange Child of Chaos: Norman Treigle." As Michael Devlin (Treigle’s protégé and “second sonâ€) told me, if you think it a suicide then “you know something I don’t know.â€
