Review
“The Book of Cats comes a year after The Big New Yorker Book of Dogs—a publishing slight that, though it stings, I’ll forgive, as the latest anthology was worth the wait. . . . Two standout articles feature real-life obsessives of ages past who reveal today’s Caturnet devotees—with their GIFs and Tumblrs and hastily aggregated listicles—for what they truly are: amateurs. . . . Eat your heart out, Cute Overload.”—The New York Times Book Review “A beautiful hardcover.”—Jenny McCarthy, People “This irresistible anthology of articles, poems, essays, fiction, cartoons, and covers pulled from the New Yorker is a veritable treasure trove for cat lovers. Just dive right in; with stories from the likes of John Updike, Maeve Brennan, Roald Dalhl, and Haruki Murakami interwoven with hilariously wry cartoons, one can’t help but be enthralled. A must-have.”—Modern Cat “A shiny, well-fed tome . . . The anthology embodies the cat’s defining characteristic: its cluster of opposites, rolled together into a giant hairball of cultural attitudes—something, perhaps, at once uncomfortably and assuringly reflective of our own chronically conflicted selves.”—Brain Pickings “This gorgeous book has earned a permanent spot on my coffee table. It is an absolute joy to read and browse through, and I know it will bring me hours and hours of pleasure for years to come. And it makes a purr-fect gift for the special cat lovers in your life.”—The Conscious Cat “[A] sumptuous volume.”—The Dallas Morning News “One need not own cats (or do cats own their owners?) or even be a pet lover to savor this feline-focused offering.”—The Sacramento Bee “[A] fun collection of short stories, articles, humor, poems, and charming color covers from the magazine’s archives . . . [a] high-quality, attractive work.”—Library Journal “Covers, cartoons, authors of pieces both longer and shorter, reflect current views of the feline subject in all its glory. . . . The quality, humor and variety make for another successful New Yorker collection.”—Kirkus Reviews “An eminently giftable anthology.”—Publishers Weekly

I've only read a few stories, but I was sort of disappointed in that most of them seem to have a definite negative tone. Rather than uplifting or pleasant situations, they seem to be about people who either hate cats, and how the cat survives, or the cats involved are only incidental parts of a rather ugly argument. The New Yorker seems to have simply gone over every story in their archives and included any one in which the word "cat" is mentioned several times.I may be selling this book if I can find a buyer - but I will read more of it first.
Sadly, the number of dull, boring articles and material that would at one time been rejected by the New Yorker in its prime far outweighs the few excellent stories here - two by JF Powers, one by John Updike, a short piece by EB White, and a story by Roald Dahl - all published when the magazine was at its best.Suggestion: Look at the cartoons and cover reproductions in your local bookstore and spend the money on lunch or dinner.
This book is A plus coffee table worthy. For any cat fancier it is a must to add to your collection, sure to delight. The New Yorker reputation comes across loud and clear from the format, writing style, selection of stories (old to the new)... the ability to capture, get inside "the cat", from quirky habits to putting us humans in our place. For those of us who think we know the cat, this will reinforce, then point out what we have yet to discover in the mystery of the species. Thank you Amazon for this selection, thank you New Yorker for the fine wine, read after read.If you can, I would highly recommend.
If you like anthologies, this book may be for you. The book features fiction and nonfiction articles about cats, cartoons about cats and New Yorker covers featuring cats. I liked the last story best because it reminded me of the Tom and Jerry cartoons I watched as a child. As a whole the book was uneven and dare I say a bit pretentious?
Now, we are surely cat-lovers! 3 of them things whirl about us every day in their fanciful ways. This book that I regaled to my wife (and her Zulu/Rigoberto, her preferred tomcat) has only received the highest recommendations and laudations. The New Yorker is - in itself - in a class of its own. With this publication, they prove that their output is of the highest standard in essence, style and irony. There is no other New Yorker. Thank you for the fun! I'll go back to caressing my cat...
This is a wonderful book. However, it is not the kind of book you pick up and read cover to cover. It is a book to savor. Be it one story at a time; a quick look at some old New Yorker covers featuring cats. Pick a poem or two. Find an author you admire, and find out what he or she has to say about cats. A person could spend five minutes enjoying whatever strikes their fancy at the moment. Or, one could spend five hours reading in depth, several selections in one sitting. One could read this book from front to back in the traditional way, but that would take some of the fun out of it. However one chooses to read this large vokume, I guarantee they will find it enjoyable. If you're a "cat person" this is a must have for your library. But, don't put it on a shelf. Place it where it can easily be picked up and enjoyed for a few minutes or a few hours.. Also, its beautiful cover is just too nice to be shelved. It needs, and wants, to be visible. Everyone who enters your home will be impressed. I have six cats, so this was a "must have" for me. I can find something about each of my cats, past and present, in this book. There are even some pieces written for those who do not like cats!
I'm a dyed in the wool cat lover. Each of the stories in this wonderful book outlines the endlessly fascinating personalities of all things feline. I'd even bet that those who aren't as enamored with kitties would gain a grin and some insight into all things cat. Thank you, New Yorker!
I'm enjoying this book very much. I love cats but cannot have one right now, so I'm making do by reading about cats. I also love The New Yorker, so the experience is very satisfying all around. The only drawback is that the volume is a bit on the hefty side. But short reading sessions will make it last that much longer.
