Finally a city map designed for the visitor who besides carrying a guide book and perhaps a camera wants to remain unencumbered by much else. This map is as detailed as it is handy. It seems to show more street names and sight-seeing details than do even Google maps; and all this in a visually very appealing layout. The waterways appear in distinct purple as do their labels, the crossing bridges and streets in white with labels in black: Figure 1.The map is printed in contiguous sections on a single sheet of thin accordion-folded cardboard: Figure 2. As you ride the Waterbuses (Vaporetti) and walk around the city (La Serenissima) you can readily trace your course from one section to the next. With its waterproof coating the map is well-suited for Venice's frequent torrential rains. What's further helpful is that the major monuments are shown in three dimensions rather than merely as symbols with a cross. Also useful is the extensive list of points of interest, Figure 3.The map's section showing the waterbus routes is alas not so easy to grasp. It has been redrawn and so much simplified as to be difficult to follow. The official route map published by the Venetian transportation agency, ACTV.it, is much clearer. See Figure 4. I bought several of these maps for my visit to Italy. I didn't care for them. Hard to read and the city is divided so you have to flip back and forth losing your place when trying to find directions. They are nicely made, but I wouldn't waste the money. Our hotel gave us a city map and it was much easier to use and read and FREE!
Until you get to Venice you have no idea how useless this map is. It's so small that there is no way you can read it and forget about it if it's even slightly dark. I suggest a fold out paper map....yep...I would normally NEVER do this and HATE looking like a tourist but you need one for a back up if you get poor reception in areas. There are so many places where street names change or you just can't find a street name. Even with Google Maps it was tricky as it can't always find the direction you are going in but having my phone and a paper map was the only way to go. If anyone wants to buy mine....I would be happy to sell it. It's horrible!
In Venice you REALLY need a map. This is a good one, accurate and waterproof, laminated and doesn't crack even when abused.I posted this same review for the Florence Map. Same goes for the Venice map, it's difficult for me to see.Streetwise maps are great in that they're laminated and indestructible. I've used them for years. Too bad I'm getting a bit myopic and now the print is getting smaller each trip. I've moved on to MapEasy's Guidemaps. Also waterproof and accurate.I took one star off of a good map. It's not their fault my eyes can't see the details without glasses.
I bought this map 1 each for Rome, Venice, and Florence and it was absolutely indispensable. I loved the way it showed all of the streets and sites in the index and had the larger inset map of the areas of interest. I will buy one of these any and every time I travel in Europe from now on. This saved us tons of time and money. Even showed the Metro lines in Rome for ease of getting around the city. It was a good size to carry in my hand all of the time and love that it was laminated to keep it clean. I marked our hotel location in dry-erase in each city for quick and easy reference point. Never steered us wrong, not once, while our Fodor's maps were full of errors. Great product!
This map is not the best map of Venice necessarily. But it is a very good map.I used mine over about 4 days in Venice, and it did everything I needed with ease.Many streets in Venice are unmarked, intermittently marked, or otherwise just hard to find. It's easy enough to navigate as long as you remember a few big streets and don't mind wandering. This map won't solve that problem.But it does let you navigate between big sights and different neighborhoods relatively easily on foot or on boat (the water taxi routes are marked as well).I love the Streetwise maps because they are tough and small. They are a best-in-class sort of map, but if you're not spending a huge amount of time in Venice, want to get around, and don't mind a little bit of adventuring (really a nice thing to do in Venice anyway) this map was very useful in my experience. Second of course to getting some directions from locals.
I bought all three of the Streetwise maps for Rome, Florence, and Venice and have been greatly surprised at the quality of all 3. The maps are small in size and easily carried in a back pocket or chest pocket in a coat. Also laminated they are made to last and last!! You can even use my idea of attaching the little foil colored stars to the maps to mark your places of interests and shopping stops. The stars can later be peeled off and the maps used over and over again, An inexpensive investment that should provide hours of pleasure not only to plan your stops in advance but to maximize your time while in one of the great cities for only a few days. We just visited Venice and the city is like a huge corn maze. The streets are more like narrow alleyways with many dead ends. There is very good signage on the buildings throughout the city that point in the direction of the three main bridges on the Grand Canal, but it's very helpful to have a map so you know exactly where you are. It also makes it easy to find your way to the important sites. The map is small enough that I could carry it in my pocket, but large enough that I could read it. We were especially happy that the map was laminated on the rainy day we were there. In my opinion, this is a must-have item for visiting Venice.
