I realized that though I don't have a problem coming up with my own ideas, I really love writing prompts. It was how I became inspired to write years ago. Writing prompts tend to be challenging because they tend to introduce ideas that you probably would not come up with yourself. Even the most imaginative writer does not consider everything. For instance, one prompt in this book is to tell a dying houseplant why it should live. My mind would have never taken me there, and so it gives me the opportunity to expand. Not all the prompts are meant for creative writing purposes. This may disappoint some, but it is a good way to really put your writing skills to the test. Some prompts ask you to just describe an object or your surroundings. Of course, a person can find ways to make that creative too. This book is meant for older writers. Some of the prompts are to describe your first sexual experience and to talk about a time you wanted to orgasm but couldn't. I believe that this publisher did put out another book with writing prompts for younger writers, in case you are a parent or teacher who want to nurture a budding writer. This book is not really appropriate for young people, either because the themes would be inappropriate or because they would not have had the experience yet to imagine it.Some prompts may make you go "yuck". It may not be something you want to write about. For instance, one of the "yuck" prompts for me was imagining that I was a serial killer and asking what was in my video library (though part of me thought it would be funny to write about a serial killer who had unexpected titles like "Too Cute"). Of course, no one is holding a gun to your head, and with 642 ideas...you can find plenty of other prompts to choose instead. However, what is nice about this book is that it does explore many emotions and character types...so you have the ability to try and expand. For instance, I am writing my first love story. I've never written a love story before, and I am pleased with how it is going considering that.My only complaint is that some of the prompts seemed to repeat themselves. While there are tons of ideas to still make the book worth the purchase...it seemed to me that the authors started running out of ideas and reusing some.

I just recieved it and haven't yet written in it, but I loovvvvvee it already. There are so many prompts (642 exactly duhh) and I have not even read 10% yet. This book has some creatively different prompts and then some that are simple, but make you think really deeply about your life. Some books may seem iffy, but this one will not disappoint unless you're not into writing prompts. And even if you're not, this book might make you start loving it. One asks about if you had one week to live, then another asks to describe a robbery from the perspective of a customer lying face down on the floor. It just shows you, from 35 contributors, how people create so differently. It's just Awesome!UPDATE: And yes (as other reviews have mentioned) there are a few "adult" prompts that a young child may not be ready for (sexual questions and such). But it's still Grrreeatt!

A nice surprise was the sheer size of this book. I didn't look at the dimensions when I bought it, and it was wider and a bit taller than I figured. It just looks and feels nicer in my hand than I suspected, and leaves plenty of space for the prompts, which I like. Some of the prompts IMO work better as simple writing exercises, which they of course are, and IMO will help anyone who wants to write develop their creativity, but there are certainly plenty of prompts that may help someone build scenes or develop characters or even come up with whole plots for new stories.Developing that creativity and getting used to writing really is the key for any aspiring writer, so a book like this is perfect. IMO, a book like this may even be more helpful for an aspiring writer than buying a "how to" book. I'm not suggesting someone not buy a book that will teach lessons to develop and hone your craft -- of course you should -- but they should supplement the writing, not stand in for it.So, as I said in my headline -- go write! And I think this book is a helpful place to do it in, providing you a place to hone your skills and develop good writing habits until your stories start writing themselves.

The suggestions are as many and varied as you can possibly imagine and if you don't feel inspired by one there are always a dozen others to try. I deducted a star because I do not like the spaces. There is no way I could hand write a decent amount in that limited space, even the ones that are one full page so I have to use them with a separate notebook or on the computer for my writing. I think they could have made this book more compact and cheaper by just giving the prompts in some attractive fashion but not the writing space which is clearly inadequate.

This book is so fun if you like to write. My husband and I love to write and be creative together. We take a date night to both write under the same topic and see how we wrote differently. Super fun (and maybe a little nerdy, but we're all about it!)

So, I thought this was a different book I saw in a local bookstore when I ordered it. When it arrived, I was slightly puzzled until I went online and realized I ordered the wrong book. My fault, not the sellers. However, to my surprise this book is actually a good book. Any writer w/ brain block or in a slump, this will help you get back on track. I am inspired again to hop on my laptop and get back to writing. If you want to leave something for your kids you could use this book as well. It is neat and def. will get you thinking about your life and hopefully inspire new ideas.

I bought this for my wife as a small gift to help her through a writing slump (journalism degree). It's an amazing little book I just guide you and ask you simple questions of things to write about yourself. A lot of people I think would love this is just the type of journal or simple self discovery book but it also get your creative juices going and kind of acts as a kick starter for a project or paper. It definitely helped her to just complete a question or a section to get her thinking and in a rhythm before tackling a bigger project.
