Christopher Tyerman, who has multiple books on the crusades, approaches the subject from a different perspective than most. In “How to Plan a Crusade†he looks at the efforts that went into preparing for a crusade vice the battles or military campaigns. The author begins by examining how people were persuaded to give up their money, endure long-term separations from their families, and perhaps give their lives for a cause often on the other side of the continent. At a time when most people rarely traveled very far from home in their lives, it took quite a bit to convince them to make the sacrifices they were being asked to make. In the first five chapters the author examines how the wars were justified, how propaganda was created and disseminated, and incentives for rewards. To me this was the slowest part of the book, not because of the writing, but simply because so many of the arguments, and the information supporting them, overlap and come across as repetitive. But it’s still important to understand these chapters because they all represent the arguments, and the process used, to motivate people. In addition to addressing how crusaders were motivated, Tyerman also includes sections on the costs of crusading and how they were funded; logistics, to include how supplies and the movement of forces was coordinated along with health and safety; what supplies were needed and the supply chain; and strategy. In How to Plan a Crusade Tyerman tends to focus on the later crusades. He acknowledges that the increase in written sources, documentation, and records, starting in the 12th century, is a factor in his analysis. As he points out, “Explicit evidence of crusade budgets dates from the Third Crusade.†(p. 182) There is also a probable relationship between the fact more records were created and that this helped the spread of crusader bureaucracy. Overall Tyerman paints an image of an increase in the bureaucracy, centralized direction, and “how to†manuals as time, and the number of crusades, went on…essentially crusading became more institutionalized over time.
This book came highly recommended and provides a wealth of valuable information for anyone interested in understanding the society that produced the crusades. Organized by topic rather than chronologically, it examines topics all too often ignored in more conventional histories from finance to health, safety and supply. Most important, it documents the immense amount of planning, coordination, organization and expense that went into mounting a massive military campaign across vast distances in the age of horse and sailing ships. After reading this book, no one can be in any doubt about how sophisticated, literate and well-organized medieval society was during the centuries in which crusading was undertaken. The book systematically and meticulously debunks notions of “spontaneous†movements by wild-eyed religious fanatics. It also highlights that in many ways crusader organization puts modern planning, blessed with all the advantages of digital technology, to shame. The weakness of the book is that it never fully transcends the academic milieu from which it originated. Tyerman meticulously documents his opinions, citing “chapter and verse†of what feels like each and every single example that supports his argument. The result is that what he is saying often gets lost in the supporting documentation. In short, the book bogs down in details and rapidly became a slog through facts rather than providing stimulating new insight. The book would have benefited from more rigorous editing that placed much of the supporting evidence in the foot- or end-notes and focused on the gist of the arguments.
Given recent revisionism and the application of modern ideas to earlier centuries, it is helpful to appreciate that many Crusaders believed in their mission and one of the by-products of the crusading efforts was better book and record keeping. Vast numbers walked from northern Europe to the 'Holy Land' (with some dangerous sea voyage added) because they believed. While enrichment and employment motivated some, many thought they were participating in a holy mission. They faced hazards that even modern logistics would scarcely wish to undertake. A good read.
